2004 Cleveland Golf BC PGA Assistants' Championship

The 2004 Cleveland Golf BC PGA Assistants' Championship is in the record books, and those in attendance were treated to a very exciting championship finish.

The low final round score belonged to Phil Jonas of the McCleery Golf Course, who posted a 68 for a 5-under par total. Chris Reeve, playing the final hole, needed birdie to join Jonas in a playoff, but made par on the hole, finishing the championship with scores of 71 and 69 for a four under-par total. John Robertson, playing in the final group of the day, needed to make eagle on the 18th to force a playoff. After a 340 yard drive, Robertson knocked his second shot onto the green, and dramatically rolled a 30 footer for eagle, forcing a playoff.

Robertson and Jonas both made remarkable birdies on the first hole, with Jonas rolling a 15 footer for birdie, and Robertson hitting a terrific approach from the rough, and making birdie from 12 foot. On the second playoff hole, both players had birdie putts. Robertson's 20 footer narrowly missed the hole, and Jonas made his 6 footer for the win. Jonas birdied the final hole in regulation, and both holes in the playoff, to claim victory. The victory was worth $4,000.

First round leader Tim Wilson, Assistant Professional at the Quilchena Golf & Country Club, held a one shot lead throughout the front nine today, before a triple bogey on the par 3 ninth hole knocked him out of contention. Wilson finished alone in 6th place. Dan Dupuis of Myrtle Point Golf Club finished alone in third, with rounds of 70 and 71 for a 141 3-under par finish.

87 Assistant Golf Professionals from across the province competed in the 36-hole stroke play event on the tree-lined, 6,748 yard Richmond CC layout. The golf course proved to be a challenging test for the professionals, challenging off the tee with small, undulating greens to challenge all approach shots.
