Defending Champs Philip Jonas and Jennifer Wyatt Repeat Repeat Wins at Mayfair Lakes
Philip Jonas of McCleery G.C. and Jennifer Wyatt of Savage Creek G.C. have a lot to celebrate tonight. Both were defending champions heading into this week, and both walked away as repeat winners in their respective championships. 2005 marks the first year that the Assistants’ and Women’s Championships have come together to be run concurrently at the same facility, which was held this year at Mayfair Lakes Golf & Country Club in Richmond, BC.
The 2005 Cleveland Golf BC PGA Assistants’ Championship finished in dramatic fashion. Philip Jonas of McCleery G.C. shot a spectacular 6-under par 65 that included a clutch sand-save for birdie from the front-side bunker on Mayfair Lakes’ par-5 18th hole. The birdie moved Jonas to 7-under for the championship and came within moments of Bryn Parry’s (1st round co-leader) costly bogey on the par-4 17th hole.
The flip-flop between Parry dropping back to 6-under, and Jonas moving to 7-under proved to be the turning point when Parry was unsuccessful at birdie on Mayfair Lakes’ par-5 18th hole. Parry wisely laid up on the 18th hole after driving it into the left rough and put it in the hands of his wedge game to convert for birdie. However, when Parry’s 20-foot birdie putt stopped a few rolls short, the victory was Jonas’ and marked the first time in 25 years (Ed Tougas 1979, 1980) that an individual successfully defended the BC PGA Assistants’ Championship. The victory was worth $3500.00.
First-round co-leader David Bolton of Savage Creek G.C. struggled with his swing most of the day, but was still able to post a solid 1-under par 70 that was good enough for T-3rd along with Kevin Klebe of Valley G.C. who posted great rounds of 69 & 68 for a 137 total.
75 Assistant Golf Professionals from across the province competed in the 36-hole stroke play event on the challenging 6660-yard Mayfair Lakes G. & C.C. layout. The golf course proved to be a challenging test for the professionals with firm undulating greens to challenge all approach shots.
In the Women’s Championship bracket, Jennifer Wyatt closed her 4th OGIO BC PGA Women’s Championship in the last five years with a routine 1-over par 73. Wyatt cruised to victory by 4 shots over Leila Chartrand of Island View G.C. who should be credited for competing in both the Women’s Championship and the Assistants’ Championship concurrently. Chartrand’s 148 total placed her in a T-30th for the Assistants’ bracket of the event.
The BC PGA would like to sincerely thank host facility Mayfair Lakes Golf & Country Club for their 1st class assistance in staging the championships along with event sponsor Rampion Enterprises (Cleveland Golf / Ogio). The 2006 championships are scheduled to be played at Morgan Creek Golf Course, home of the PGA of BC.
