Alberta wins Inter-provincial Team Title @ 2006 Canadian Senior Men's Championship
Alberta shot a team-total 219 at Glendale Golf and Country Club on Wednesday to win the Inter-provincial team title at the 2006 Canadian Men’s Senior Championship, conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association.
The foursome of Howard Broun (69-72) and Dave Rabbis of Calgary (73-73) as well as Red Deer natives Merv Dusyk (77-77) and Peter Duncan (79-74) fired a two-day, team-total of 438 to outlast Ontario by 10 strokes.
The win marked the province’s ninth Senior team title and completed a provincial sweep that included an Alberta team-title at both the Men’s Mid-Amateur and Willingdon Cup earlier this year.
“We came into the early portion of this championship focused on the team event,” said Broun. “We’ve got a great group of guys and it’s nice to win this for the province. The younger fellas won the team event at the Mid-Amateur and the Amateur earlier this year so it’s nice to have a good showing and finish the season sweep for Alberta.”
Following Alberta and Ontario were Quebec in third at 449, British Columbia at 452 and the host Manitoba team rounding out the top-five at 462.
With his even-par 72, Broun heads into Thursday’s final round of individual play at 3-under for the championship. Peter Howe of Crawford, B.C. shot a 73 Wednesday to sit alone in second at 1-over. Calgary natives Albert Dowdell and Dave Raabis hold a share of third at 2-over while Graham Cooke of Hudson, Que. is fifth at 3-over.
“I spent the first part of my round concentrating on Stu (Hamilton) and Graham (Cooke) and sort of starting watching them play,” said Broun originally a native of New Zealand who finished tied for 11th in 2005. “I putted a lot better yesterday so it’s nice to be able to hang around par for the round and go in with good thoughts for tomorrow.”
In the Super Senior division (70+), defending champion Patrick Suraj of Etobicoke, Ont. shot a second-round 77 to sit at 154, five shots up on American Carey Schulten of Dallas. Lindsay Kipps of Surrey, B.C. and Chuck Ribelin of Dallas hold a share of third at 162.
