Christina Spence wins the 2006 B.C. Women’s Amateur Championship
Fairview Mountain Golf Course, Oliver, B.C. June 29, 2006 – Christina Spence, of Alberni Golf Club, Port Alberni, B.C. captured the 2006 B.C. Women’s Amateur title at 3-under 289 - an impressive 5 strokes over Kira Meixner of Richmond, B.C. who carded 2-over 294.
“I’m hitting the ball as good as I ever have,” says Spence. “My putting was going well, my ball striking was good, may attitude was excellent, I was positive, nothing got me down – I came to win.
Pitt Meadows, Ashley Hogg finished third at 5-over 297 followed by fourth place finisher, Kirby Dreher of Fort St. John who shot 6-over 298. While playing with Jackie Little and Ali Stinson on Tuesday, Spence shot the low round of the
week and claimed the course record. “Everything was just perfect – A.J. Eathorne was here on Tuesday and I always play well when she shows up,” added Spence. “I’m superstitious, so that was a good omen. It was also very special to play with Jackie and Ali – Jackie’s a legend, a hero - it was great for us to take home the championships.”
For the Women’s Amateur Championship, Fairview Mountain played to a par 73 with a course rating of 74.3, slope 132.
Christina Spence of Port Alberni, Kira Meixner of Richmond, Ashley Hogg of Pitt meadows and Kirby Dreher of Fort St. John will comprise the B.C, Team for the 2006 Royale Cup National Women's Amateur Championship at Moncto n Golf & Country Club in Moncton, August 1-4.
The Women’s Amateur, considered the “major” women’s amateur golf in the region is also one of the oldest sporting competitions in the province, with the winner taking home the prestigious Flumerfelt Cup.
