‘SHIN CROWNED KING AGAIN AT THE LINKS’

It seems like Canadian Tour Professional John Shin has taken a liking to his old stomping grounds at King’s Links Golf Club. You see, in VGT’s Opening event this year (The Brad Garside Open), Shin took down Kendal Yonemoto on the first playoff hole with a 30 foot putt to win his first VGT event in 2008. Five months later, Shin was back to his old tricks, shooting an impressive score of 66 (-6) to get himself into a playoff once again, this time against former Champion Tour player Norm Jarvis.

After a wayward drive that put Shin deep into the fescue, Shin pulled off a remarkable shot onto the green, and left himself 30 feet from the pin. Shin once again drained the putt and birdied the first playoff hole to claim the title of 2008 VGT Summer Pro-am Champion. Shin’s win for $1,700 took him into 5th place overall in the VGT order of merit standings. Jarvis took home $1,200 for his 2nd place showing. Lurking only one shot away were Professionals Murray Poje and Bryn Parry, who started the day slightly sluggish, but finished with back nine scores of 29 (-7) and 21 (-5) respectively to make $850 each for their T3rd place finish.

In the team side of the draw, it was a red-hot team of Dave Bolton, Brandan Brassart, Gary Brassart, Kathy Brassart and Neil Johnston who took home low honors, shooting a 2-best net score total of -32. The team took home the grand prize of premier Galvin Green Rainsuits and Cleveland Hibore Rescue Clubs. In the Individual Junior competition, Kyle Dodman of Ledgeview Golf & CC took home Low Gross honours in the 0-8 handicap flight shooting 73, winning in retrogression over Vancouver Golf Club Michael Bell. Low net honors went to Brendan Southwind of Fraserview with a net 70, edging out Harrison Clegg of The Redwoods by one shot.

In the 9-18 handicap junior section, Brandan Brassart of Ledgeview Golf & CC took home low gross honors, shooting 80, one shot better than 2nd place finisher Pat Ryan of the VGT Junior Academy at Seymour Creek. Winner of the net side of the junior 9-18 handicap flight was Lily He of King’s Links, shooting 70. Second place in the net contest went to Keiran Barill of the VGT Junior Academy at Seymour Creek. In the Johnston Meier Insurance $100,000 Shoot-out, 11 players qualified through their on-course KP’s for a chance to shoot for $100,000 from the 165 yard marker on the 18th fairway. With most of the 100 plus players watching the event, some dramatic moments were created and although none of the shots did go in for a hole-in-one, the KP winner of the contest was John Shin who was honored with a 2009 VGT Membership. A special congratulations go out to the KP winner on hole #13 BEN JUNG who had his first ever hole-in-one!! Well done BEN!!!

Overall, 105 golfers competed in what turned out to be a very ‘lucky weather’ day out at King’s Links. What was a miserable day of weather in the rest of the Lower Mainland turned out to be a very decent day out on the south peninsula of Boundary Bay (like it does very often). King’s Links Golf Club was in spectacular shape for the tournament, the fairways in tremendous shape and greens rolling with great speed and as truly as you can get! Our special thanks go out to the owners of King’s Links (Brad, Maria and Richard Newell) and their pro-shop staff (Neil Bidewell) for making our event such a great success.

We were very proud to have Cindy Graves out again from the charity KIDS UP FRONT (www.kidsupfront.com). Cindy conducted the putting contest on the day (which was won by Brandan Brassart) as well as a 50/50 draw and we managed to raise close to $1,000 for the charity on the day. We will work with Cindy again at our fun event on Sept.14th titled the VGT/Seymour Creek Golf Center Mini Putt Championship where we will offer a number of less privileged juniors a chance to take a 2-hour golf clinic with some of our VGT Pros. Details of the Mini-Putt Championship can be found on our website.

I have attached a copy of the Prize Winners that also outlines all the major and supporting sponsors of our event. Our thanks go out to all of the sponsors of our Tour and this event and the many supporting volunteers behind the tournament. Without all of your support this tournament just wouldn’t happen!
