ACC - A Sad Day For All!

The 2002 Air Canada Championship is officially the last. Tournament Chairman Dave Durand provides the official comments. It is a sad day for Surrey, the volunteers, and above all the numerous charities the PGA event helped assist.

ACC officials commented that they were "very close", with various options and sponsors, but to find a $20 million dollar commitment over 4 years was just too much.

The ACC originally started as the Great Vancouver Open in 1996. In 1999 it was renamed and put Vancouver and Surrey in the fore front of a world wide audience.

The Royal Bank at one point expressed interest but time and commitments by sponsors just was not there.

On the brighter side of events coming to town, The LPGA Tour's Bank of Montreal Canadian Women's open is scheduled for the Point Grey Golf Club in 2003. The Royal Canadian Golf Association may bring the Bell Canadian Open to the Vancouver area as early as 2004.
