ALS GOLF-A-THONS IN FULL SWING

For the fourth year, PGA of BC members have given their muscles to a great cause.

The PGA of BC Golf-a-Thons for ALS have been taking place primarily throughout the month of June at multiple locations around the province. Professionals have been raising some serious money for the ALS Society of BC by playing golf from dawn to dusk - and even in the dark in some cases.

Many PGA of BC professionals have their Golf-a- Thons underway. Thus far 34 courses and more than 75 professionals or apprentice professionals have participated in Golf-a-Thons. In some cases, the pros have been accompanied by club members and juniors.

Here are some Golf-a-Thon highlights:

Granite Pointe Golf Club
Travis Mann and Jamie Stevens began their Golf-a- Thon at 12:00am on June 17th and played straight through until 11:59pm. Despite some lightening and rain they each played 279 holes and made a total of 89 birdies with 8 eagles. Travis and Jamie were a little fatigued at the end but they still managed to play solid golf with both carding a birdie each in the last 30 minutes. Their financial total is not 100% calculated yet but early figures show they have raised approximately $4700.

Hyde Mountain on Mara Lake
Rick Thompson started his Golf-a-Thon on a very wet morning at 4:30am. Luckily some sun came through in the afternoon. A total of 153 holes were played with 17 birdies carded. Fellow CPGA member and General Manager, Bill Wilson, also joined in by playing 36 holes and 2 club members also joined in for the last 36 holes of the day.

Salmon Arm Golf Club
On Wednesday, June 17 Doug Herron and Adam Blair began golfing at 4:15am. They played a total of 594 holes with their fastest rounds completed in 53 minutes! They had the support of the following volunteers, without whom their Golf-a-Thon would not have been possible: John Thompson, Gerry Hay, Ken Holmes, Dale Machesney, Maurice Noel, Dave McClure, Greg Hughes, Bob Howard and Deb Turner.

Sun Rivers Golf Course
Scott Allan and Brad Clapp completed their Golf-a- Thon on June 18th with 2 more staff from Sun Rivers. They played a total of 173 holes and preliminary numbers show they raised approximately $2500. The photo above is the Sun River Golf-a-Thon Team.

A quarter of a million dollars has been raised by PGA of BC members in the first three years of this program, and the golf-a-thons represent a major source of funding for the ALS Society. Funds go to equipment for patients with this dreaded disease, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a rapidly progressive, neuromuscular disease. It attacks the motor neurons that transmit electrical impulses from the brain to the voluntary muscles in the body. When these muscles fail to receive messages, they lose strength, atrophy and die. ALS can hit anyone at any, time regardless of age, gender, or ethnic origin. The average life expectancy after diagnosis is 3 to 5 years. Equipment costs for each patient average $137,000; nursing and home care costs can be up to 10 times this amount.
