Vancouver - Heather Bowie fired an eagle and five birdies to take the lead in the opening round of the BMO Financial Group Canadian Women's Open today at Vancouver's Point Grey Golf & Country Club. Sorenstam Withdraws Annika Sorenstam, who has been battling the flu since last week's US Women's Open, was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to illness. She completed six holes but was too unwell to continue.
"I feel very bad for the fans and the tournament but my whole body feels ill," Sorenstam said. "I was hoping the last couple of days with rest would make me feel better but the last couple of months have caught up with me. I tried my best to play today, and I apologize to the fans, but I need to go home and get better."
"It's unfortunate Annika was unable to continue and I know she feels badly about disappointing the fans," said Jocelyne Bourassa, RCGA Director of Women's Championships. "We appreciate the effort she made in coming to Vancouver and trying to play despite her condition and we hope she's feeling better soon."
Hole-in-one
Leslie Spalding aced the par-3 second hole with a 5-iron from 158 yards to card her second career hole-in-one.
Round Two
Second round action gets underway on Friday starting at 7:30am. Pairings and tee times are available on-line at www.bmogolf.com. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the main spectator entrance on Dunbar Street. Friday passes are $25 each and $35 for Saturday and Sunday.
