BRADY SCHNELL MAINTAINS ONE STROKE LEAD AT SPRING QUALIFYING SCHOOL
PARKSVILLE, B.C., - First round leader Brady Schnell shot a two under par 70 to maintain his one stroke lead after two rounds of the Canadian Tour’s Spring Qualifying School.
His seven under par 137 leads Todd Killingsworth (70) and Mike Roters (69) by one shot at the halfway mark.
Sharing fourth spot at 140 after matching 71s are Jordan Irwin and Dave Williamson while Jae Woo Im (73) and Roger Sloan (71) are in a dead heat for the sixth and final exempt spot at 141.
Alone in eighth at 142 is Matt Marshall with Kory Storer (71), Jason D’Amore (73), amateur David Cao (68) and Daniel Kush (71) another shot back.
“Today was a bit different than yesterday,” said Schnell. “I was driving and putting well but my irons weren’t that great; they kept getting me into trouble.”
Starting the day with three consecutive pars, Schnell then went seven without one in a four birdie three bogey run.
“I really don’t know exactly what happened during that stretch,” he continued.
“But whenever I make a bogey I try to come right back with a birdie and for the most part, that is what I did.”
After bogeying seven and eight, Schnell made key birdies at nine and ten to steady himself.
“It’s always nice to make one at the turn and for me it was a confidence boost after the previous two holes. I didn’t feel like being over par going to the tenth.”
Despite maintaining his lead, Schnell feels he is leaving shots on the course. “I’m scoring well but I’m not firing on all cylinders,” he revealed.
“I’m not playing well with my irons and that is making everything a bit more difficult.”
With non-exempt status and a missed cut in Mexico, Jordan Irwin acknowledges his pro career isn’t off to the start he had hoped.
“No, this isn’t the way I envisioned things,” he said. “However, this is where I am and I have to do what it takes to improve my situation.”
After an opening 67, his 70 leaves him inside exempt territory.
“Yesterday was one of those days were everything went well but I never really got it going today. Overall, I would say I posted a decent score considering how I played.”
“I started off well enough with a birdie but made a bogey from 130 yards out at No. 5.
“The pin was long left and I landed on the wrong side of the green and spun it onto the fringe and couldn’t get up and down.”
His second bogey came at the difficult par-3 eighth hole.
“You’ve got a long and narrow green there and they had the pin all the way back on the right side,” explained Irwin.
“I put it into the middle of the green but had a ridiculous 80-foot putt for birdie and I three-putted. From where I was, the putt went up, down and all over the place before getting to the hole.”
Battling swirling winds for several holes on the back nine, Irwin sandwiched seven consecutive pars between birdies at ten and eighteen.
The top six players at the conclusion of play Friday will receive exempt status while the next six and ties earn non-exempt status. In the event of a tie for the sixth exempt spot, a sudden death playoff will be held to determine the final exempt card.
