Best Western Inn-Kelowna Wins Top Green Award
Best Western Inn-Kelowna was awarded "Sustainability Leader of the Year 2010" at the Green Business Awards held April 22, 2010 in Kelowna, BC. The Green Business Awards were created and are operated by Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Okanagan in partnership with the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce. The awards recognize businesses and organizations in the Central Okanagan who successfully integrate environmentally sustainable practices in their business operations.
Receiving the award on behalf of the hotel was Greg Salloum, CEO, stating "We are all a work in progress. We have made a conscious decision to focus on our vision of keeping our air, water and earth safe and clean for future generations. We know there will always be challenges in attempting to fulfill the vision however we remain committed to taking action, in moving forward, researching, implementing, promoting, educating and mentoring. We are honoured to receive the Sustainability Leader of the Year award as it is recognition of these actions".
The Best Western Inn-Kelowna Golf Okanagan has a extensive resume of environmental initiatives which have been implemented. "We direct our environmental practices towards energy conservation, water conservation, solid waste management, indoor air quality, building infrastructure, environmental management and community outreach". A new 24 guest room addition, aiming for LEED Silver certification is scheduled to open in June.
"Not only do we reduce and reuse, we track our energy use in an effort to measure our carbon footprint which we offset contributing to national and global projects. We are working diligently at creating a carbon neutral stay for our guests. It is time to stop borrowing from future generations what is owed to them. We need to leave the planet in better shape than we found it and the time to act is now," says Salloum.
