Big Sky Golf and Country Club
Big Sky Golf and Country Club
British Columbia’s newest golf hot spot is Pemberton BC. You can make the beautiful trip to get there in your car; on your motorbike, via a tour bus, or you can step back in time and ride the rails. Whichever way you choose to get there you must go and you must take your golf clubs. Pemeberton is home to two fine 18 hole golf courses with the premier course being the 18 hole 7,000 yard Big Sky Golf and Country Club. Golf Digest gave Big Sky 4 ½ out of 5 stars; it doesn’t get much better than that.
Sasquatch Lives
The area, from Squamish through Pemberton, is home to the fabled Sasquatch. This 12 foot tall humanoid has been seen by thousands over the years but rarely does the hard evidence ever pile up to more than a couple of grainy photos. But proof positive of Sasquatch existence has can be found on the Big Sky golf course. Number four is a monstrous 600 (from the tips) yard, dog leg par five whose fairway has 3 water hazards cutting across it and then running up the right hand side of it. For most homo sapiens the white tees are about as far back as one should go. From here you have to decide if you want to hit a 3-wood and be safe or do you bang the driver and risking hitting the first creek crossing. A smart lay up short of the water leaves you with another decision. “Do I lay up short of water number two or do I gamble on a shot of 180-220 yards?” Get use to this, as all the par 5 holes on this course are 3 shot holes.
Perhaps there isn’t a more dramatic hole on the course than the par four, 405 yard, number 16. You tee off from an elevated tee box and fire to a hole that doglegs hard to the right and there is a lake lining the whole inside of the dogleg from tee to green. What fairway there is, on the left, isn’t wide and it banks from left to right feeding every shot back towards the water. It is a tough hole but a fair hole.
A Full Fledged Golf Destination
Not many paces are worth a 2-hour drive, that’s how long it will take to get from Vancouver to Pemberton, just to hit balls. But if you go on a sunny day hitting balls on their range is a treat. And if want to knock a few strokes of your game the Big Sky Golf Academy is been rated as one of the top schools in North America. Open from April through to mid October, Big Sky gets half the rain of Vancouver and it isn’t uncommon for there to be snow on the ground in Whistler while it is time for golf in Pemberton.
