Bryn Parry wins CPGA Assistants’ Championship

For three years running, a resident of British Columbia is crowned the Titleist & FootJoy CPGA Assistants’ Champion. North Vancouver’s Bryn Parry (Seymour Creek Golf Centre) shot a 74 (+4) today for a 206 (-4) total at The Briars Golf Club near Lake Simcoe to win his second Assistants’ title. Parry led all three rounds of the tournament.

“This is just awesome, I love playing in this tournament. It fits me really well,” stated Parry.

Parry, who won last in 1999, became the fifth player to win multiple titles since the tournament began in 1970. He won by three shots over Mike Belbin (The Broadmoor), 73-68-68. Phil Jonas (McCleery GC) finished tied for third with Troy Prusky (Lakeside GC) at 210 (E).

Parry entered the day with a comfortable seven shot lead at 132 (-8). He birdied one and 11 and picked up six bogeys, three on each nine.

“I had two birdies and felt like I bogeyed every other hole,” stated Parry, who won the $7,900 first-place cheque. “I was aware of what everyone else in the field was doing and wasn’t playing as aggressive today. That got me into a bit of trouble. It was a smart round of golf, not a good round. I’ll take it though.”

The two-time winner was also awarded with exemptions into the 2005 PGA of America Assistants’ Championship, 2005 Australian PGA Assistants’ Championship and the 2006 CPGA Championship (a stop on the Nationwide Tour circuit). He played in the 2000 CPGA Championship as a result of his 1999 Assistants’ victory.

Parry’s counterparts from British Columbia also won the InterZone Team Competition. Parry, Jonas, Myles Johnson (Spallumcheen G&CC) and Blair Piercy (Arbutis Ridge G&CC) tallied a final score of 418 (best three out of four scores cumulated over two rounds).

Belbin, who hails from Sherwood Park, AB, started today nine shots back of Parry but moved up into second by carding five birdies (seven, nine, 12, 13, 18) and bogeys on five, 16, and 17. He finished today’s round with a 68 (-2).

“If you hit it long on this golf course, you’re in trouble,” referring to his hitting his tee shot over the green on the par three No. 5. “I had a couple of mishaps and some bad bogeys. I hit too much club on 16 and I didn’t hit it far enough on 17 (a dogleg), but I’m happy that I finished strong on 18.”

All of Belbin’s birdie putts were under 10 feet. This is the second time that he has played in the tournament.

“Coming into today, I knew I was far away from Bryn and I felt like it was almost out of reach. But anything can happen out there. I was getting close but wasn’t able to make more putts.”

Belbin’s team came in second in the InterZone Competition.

“I’m really pleased that three Alberta players who were also on my team finished in the top five. It’s just great.”
