CANADA’S FIRST NATIONAL WOMEN’S SCRAMBLE GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP A SUCCESS
80 players contend for inaugural title for recreational women golfers
Gormley, ON (September 15, 2003) - Four recreational women golfers earned a name with the elite on Tuesday, capturing the inaugural Canadian Ladies’ Golf Association’s (CLGA) National Women’s Scramble Championship in Gormley, ON.
Sue Gaston (Aurora, ON), Susan Tesi (Beaton, ON) Kim Bradley (Mississauga, ON) and Rosie Piertramala (Mt. Albert, ON) nicknamed Team Bayer earned the title by shooting a two-day ‘best-ball’ scramble score of 66-69-135 (-8) finishing 10 strokes ahead of the second place team.
“We’re shocked. We had no clue that we’d do this well,” said Gaston, who acted as the team’s captain. “When we entered this tournament we didn’t expect to win. It was just so much fun it didn’t really matter what happened.”
Tesi and the rest of her teammates agreed. “I can’t believe that we won, it was a great two days and our team had lots of fun; so much fun. We’ll definitely be back next year.”
Developed for ‘recreational’ and ‘executive’ women golfers, this ‘best-ball’ scramble style event featured a variety of skill levels. Many of the participants attending the inaugural CLGA Women’s Scramble Championship event were here to enjoy a few days of golf, meet new friends, and try the sport at a competitive level.
The CLGA hopes this event will grow in its magnitude over the years, introducing more females to golf and the CLGA.
“This is an excellent start to what we feel will become a much larger national program in the future,” Executive Director, Jeff Thompson. “Our goals are simple, ultimately we are looking to attract more and more females to the game of golf and by offering a competitive opportunity such as a scramble format will make their initial experience with tournament golf enjoyable at any level.”
The CLGA’s long-term vision encompasses a series of grassroots qualifying events across Canada, followed by provincial championships and finally a national tournament featuring the provincial team winners.
Sabine Findlay of Oakville, ON, who only plays golf very casually and considers herself ‘not very good’, enjoyed the scramble format and her first competitive tournament.
“I think the scramble is perfect for a golfer who is new to the game,” explained Findlay. “I got to play with a friend who is an experienced golfer. Playing with her really taught me a lot about the game and makes you feel pretty good about yourself.”
“You don’t have to worry about hitting every shot well; if you hit a bad shot you still get to feel what it’s like to hit a decent shot. I learned a lot and it was a great experience.”
In a scramble format tournament, each team member will hit a tee shot and the best drive is selected. The other team members will move their balls to the selected drive and all play the second shot from this location. The best second shot is selected and the procedure is repeated until the ball is holed out.
Presented by Women of Influence Luncheon Series, the CLGA National Scramble Championship was a two-day event with proceeds going to support the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation’s ‘Fore the Cure’ program. Clublink hosted the CLGA on September 14 & 15 utilizing both the ‘north’ & ‘south’ courses at Station Creek Golf Club in Gormley,
