Seventeen Canadians Set To Compete At CN Canadian Women's Open
Seventeen Canadians, including Lorie Kane, Dawn Coe-Jones and Alena Sharp will hit the links at the 2006 CN Canadian Women’s Open, August 7–13 at London Hunt and Country Club in London, Ont.
Kane, a Charlottetown, P.E.I. native, is among seven Canadian LPGA players who will make the Tour stop in London looking to become the first Canuck to take home the title since Canadian golf legend Jocelyne Bourassa’s historic victory in 1973. Kane is joined by fellow Canadian LPGA Tour players A.J. Eathorne of Penticton, B.C., Canadian Golf Hall of Famer Dawn Coe-Jones of Campbell River, B.C., Alena Sharp of Hamilton, Ont., Nancy Harvey of Swift Current, Sask., Kim Brozer of Red Deer, Alta., and Isabelle Beisiegel of St. Hilaire, Que.
Beisiegel is an inspirational story, making a return to the golf course looking to renew her professional career after taking this season off to battle Graves disease. With her trip to London, Beisiegel will make her first start on the LPGA Tour calendar in 2006 which she hopes will be a spring-board to a full-time return on the LPGA Tour next season. Beisiegel has battled the disease since her diagnosis last November which forced her to withdraw from LPGA Q-School.
In addition to the seven LPGA Tour players, the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) has also awarded 10 additional spots to Canadians who have earned exemptions into the CN Canadian Women’s Open.
Salimah Mussani of Burlington, Ont., leads the way for CN Canadian Women’s Tour players who have travelled along the RCGA’s Pathway to Champions earning coveted exemptions into this year’s CN Canadian Women’s Open. Mussani, 26, has had a stellar season carding back-to-back CN Canadian Women’s Tour victories and notched a victory on the Duramed Futures Tour – the LPGA development series. Also earning an exemption due to their top standing on the CN Canadian Women’s Tour Order of Merit are Corina Kelepouris of Drayton Valley, Alta., Lisa Meldrum of Montreal, Jessica Shepley of Oakville, Ont., and Cheryl Mitchell of Walpole Island, Ont.
This will mark the second appearance for both Kelepouris and Meldrum at Canada’s lone stop on the LPGA Tour. Kelepouris earned an exemption into last season’s event while Meldrum, a former three-time Canadian Amateur champion, competed at the 2003 Canadian Women’s Open and made the cut in her professional debut. Shepley, a Duramed Futures Tour regular, will make her first appearance on the LPGA Tour. Meldrum and Shepley are also former graduates of the RCGA’s Women’s National Amateur Team program.
Mitchell will make history when she tees it up in London by becoming the first First Nations golfer to compete in an LPGA Tour event. Mitchell, who plays on both the CN Canadian Women’s Tour and the Duramed Futures Tour hails from the Walpole Island Reserve on the Canada-US border.
Three Canadian amateur players will also compete in London with 2005 Royale Cup National Women’s Amateur Champion, Laura Matthews of Essex, Ont., leading the way. Matthews is joined by fellow National Amateur Team members Mary Ann Lapointe of Georgetown, Ont. and Kira Meixner of Richmond, B.C. Matthews, who earned her exemption by winning last year’s Canadian Women’s Amateur title will first defend her amateur crown a week earlier in Moncton, N.B., then immediately travel to London to test her skills against the LPGA Tour’s best. Lapointe, a recent inductee of the Ontario Golf Hall of Fame and Meixner both earned their exemptions through their performances at the recent British Ladies Amateur Championship held in late June.
Another 2005 champion will join the field in Lorna Miedema of Calgary, Alta. Last year Miedema won the Canadian PGA Women’s Championship and has made a successful comeback from back injuries early on in her career challenging on both the CN Canadian Women’s Tour and Duramed Futures Tour.
Marie-Josée Rouleau of St. Lambert, Que. was also granted an exemption into the CN Canadian Women’s Open via her play on the LPGA’s developmental Duramed Futures Tour. She is currently the second-ranked Canadian on the Duramed Futures Tour money list behind Mussani and was one of five Canadians who made the cut during last year’s Canadian Women’s Open.
Several more Canadians still could qualify for the CN Canadian Women’s Open with four spots still available through the Monday Open qualifier. Last year, 10 Canadians earned a berth into the championship raising the total to a record 26 Canadians competing in Canada’s national Women’s Open championship.
