Peter Howe Wins Canadian Men's Senior Championship
It was a Winnipeg homecoming of sorts as Peter Howe of Crawford, B.C. fired a final-round, 1-over 73 at Glendale Golf and Country Club on Thursday to win the 2006 Canadian Men’s Senior Championship, conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association.
Howe, who spent his first 17 years in Winnipeg before moving west, began the day four strokes back of two-day leader Howard Broun of Calgary. Broun had held the lead for the first 69 holes of the 72-hole championship before back-nine troubles on Thursday brought the field into contention.
Momentum would shift on Glendale’s infamous par-3, 16th when a Broun bogey and Howe birdie would give each competitor a share of the lead heading into the final stretch.
The pair came down 18 tied at 2-over when Broun blew his tee shot left into the trees. Sensing opportunity, Howe, sitting safely on the fairway, would watch Broun chip twice to get back onto the fairway. With victory within reach, Howe drained his par putt to take home the title by two strokes.
“I guess you can chalk it up to the power of perseverance,” said the 56-year old Howe. “It seemed as if Howard was too far to catch but I just kept grinding away at my game. No doubt this is the biggest win of my career and it feels pretty special.”
Broun would finish with a tournament-total 220 and a share of runner-up honours with legendary amateurs Graham Cooke of Hudson, Que. and Stu Hamilton of Mississauga.
Hamilton had the shot of the tournament Thursday as the four-time former Canadian Mid-Amateur champion used a 5-iron from 178 yards for an ace on the 7th hole at Glendale. The hole-in-one was Hamilton’s 8th career and 3rd in championship play.
In the Super Senior division (70+), defending champion Patrick Suraj of Etobicoke, Ont. led from start to finish and cruised to a convincing 7-stroke victory. Suraj, a former two-time Canadian Senior champion and only player to win both the Senior and Super Senior divisions, becomes the first Super Senior to capture multiple titles. The 71-year old has also claimed four Ontario Senior titles in what has become a late blooming career.
“It was tough out there today but it feels nice to get the win and defend my title,” said Suraj, who shot a final-round 80 to finish with a tournament-total 234. “I’m not hitting the ball the way I used to but to get to my age and still be competitive makes me want to enjoy it while I can.”
Lindsay Kipps of Surrey, B.C. shot a final-round 79 to finish second at 241 while American Carey Schulten of Dallas was third at 242.
The 2007 Canadian Men’s Senior Championship will be played September 4-7 at Kawartha Golf and Country Club in Peterborough, Ont.
Next Monday will mark a special occasion for one of this week’s tournament officials as Winnipeg native Al Macatavish – an honourary life governor, rules official and past president of both the RCGA and Golf Manitoba will be honoured for his contributions to the game of golf with an induction into the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame. The induction will take place Monday, September 25th at McPhillips Street Station Casino in Winnipeg.
The season-ending Canadian Senior Men’s Championship caps off the RCGA’s 2006 Pathway to Champions that saw the association conduct 22 junior, amateur and professional championships across the country. The Pathway included six regional CN Future Links Championships, 10 men’s and women’s amateur competitions, four CN Canadian Women’s Tour events, the CN Canadian Women’s Open and the Canadian Open.
