Canadian PGA Awards $14,000 in Scholarships

The Canadian Professional Golfers’ Association awarded today $14,000 in scholarship funding to seven notable and worthy students across Canada.

The annual scholarships are intended to encourage and promote the attainment of higher educational goals for the children and grandchildren of Canadian PGA Members. Each recipient has been awarded $2,000.

Applications were judged by an independent panel and awarded based on academic achievement and contributions to the community. The winners are Natalie Cushner of Lloydminster, AB, Ian Lamb of Calgary, AB, Ben Pidlaski of Kelowna, BC, Marc-André Piette of Rouyn-Noranda, PQ, Bryan Read of Winnipeg, MB, Thomas Schmidt of Stratford, ON, and Jamie Wilson of Port Colborne, ON.

“On behalf of the Canadian PGA, I would like to congratulate each winner, who are very deserving recipients,” stated Alan Scott, president of the Canadian PGA. “It gives us great pleasure to award scholarship funding to students who strive not only academically but those who are well involved in their communities.”

Ms. Natalie Cushner – Natalie is the daughter of Peter Cushner, Head Professional at Lloydminster G&CC in Lloydminster, AB. Natalie is entering her final year at the University of Alberta, where she is enrolled in the Faculty of Education with a major in Social Studies and a minor in Spanish. Upon entrance, Natalie was awarded a Faculty of Science Academic Excellence Scholarship and a University of Alberta Academic Excellence Scholarship. She received First Class Standings this past year with a GPA of 3.7. Natalie is actively involved in her community - She is a volunteer for her church, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, drama camps, junior golf camps at Lloydminster, and was a co-coach for a local high school running team. Natalie was a member of the Lloydminster Comprehensive High School golf team and represented her school at Provincial Competitions in Alberta.

Mr. Ian Lamb - Ian is the son of Wib Lamb, Head Professional at Bears Paw G&CC in Calgary, AB. Recently, Ian was accepted into the University of Calgary’s Bachelor of Commerce degree in Accounting program, where he also received a $500 Academic Merit Admission Award upon acceptance. For three consecutive years, Ian made the honour roll and was a recipient of the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship. Outside of school, Ian is a very accomplished athlete in hockey (played in the 2002 Alberta Cup for the Calgary Northstars) and he won the 2002 Otto Memorial Golf Tournament. In the summer months, Ian works in the backshop at Bears Paw and has served on the junior committee which plans junior events throughout the golf season. Outside of school, Ian volunteers at the Calgary Mustard Seed, where he prepares and serves meals to the less fortunate.

Mr. Ben Pidlaski, Kelowna, BC - Ben is the son of Gregory Pidlaski, Head Professional at the Kelowna G&CC in Kelowna, BC. This is the second year Ben has received the scholarship. Ben completed his first year at the University of Alberta in the Engineering Program, where he received First Class Standing. He has also received the University of Alberta Academic Excellence Scholarship as well as the WS Ziegler Dean of Engineering Entrance Scholarship. Since joining his home course in 1998, Ben has volunteered at numerous tournaments, he has been employed as a customer service assistant since 2000 and was the recipient of the 2002 Dr. Pat Bobyn Award, given annually to the junior member who displays sportsmanship, a positive attitude, exemplary etiquette and dedication towards the game.

Mr. Marc-André Piette, Rouyn-Noranda, PQ. Marc- André is the son of Gerard Piette, Head Professional at Dallaire Golf Municipal. Marc has been accepted to attend Cegep de Chicoutimi for two years and then will attend the University of Quebec at Montreal where he hopes to obtain a law degree. As a senior student at Ecole secondaire Massey-Vanier, Marc-André was the graduation yearbook committee chairman, he was involved in the conception of an art exhibition and was the Master of Ceremonies at his graduation. He also received the Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton scholarship for the best student. Marc-André is devoted to community service groups, especially when it deals with the environment – he is involved in spring cleaning projects and maintaining environmentally-friendly golf facilities. Marc-André has worked in the proshop at Daillaire Golf Municipal for three years as a customer service representative.

Mr. Bryan Read, Winnipeg, MB. Bryan is the son of Stephen Read, Head Professional at Niakwa G&CC in Winnipeg, MB. He is currently enrolled at the University of Manitoba and is applying into the Asper School of Business with the goal of obtaining a degree in Finance and Marketing. His long term goal is to complete his Law degree. Before entering post-secondary education, Bryan was class valedictorian at J.H. Bruns Collegiate, he received the Academic Excellence Award in Physical Education and the Member of the Legislative Assembly Award for student leadership. He has served on numerous volunteer committees including the Natural Helpers program, the Student Voice Committee, Safe Schools Committee, the Drug Awareness Committee and the Stop Racism Committee. As a teen, Bryan competed in six Manitoba Junior Golf Championships, where he was the runner-up in the 12 and under category. He has worked at Niakwa since 2000 where he is currently the manager of 14 back shop personnel and works full time in the pro shop throughout the summer months.

Mr. Thomas Schmidt, Stratford, ON. Thomas is the son of Frederick Schmidt, a Retired CPGA Professional and this is the third year he has received this scholarship. Thomas is enrolled in the Computer Science at Ryerson University where he was one of five recipients of the President’s National Scholarship Award. Once again, his name was added to the 2004-2005 Dean’s List for outstanding academic achievement of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. Thomas accumulates over 750+ hours of community service throughout his school years and has worked as a Research Assistant for the Vice Chair of Computer Science at Ryerson for one year. He is also a Microsoft Student Ambassador at Ryerson and is currently assisting a number of students for which English is a second language.

Ms. Jamie Wilson, Port Colborne, ON. Jamie is the daughter of Alexander Wilson, Head Professional at Port Colborne CC in Port Colborne, ON. She was recently accepted into the Science 1 Program at McMaster University with long term plans of becoming a pharmacist. Throughout her secondary schooling, Jamie has been actively involved in her school and the community – as a part of numerous varsity teams (including golf), she represented her high school at the Ontario Education Leadership Centre in 2002 and 2003 and was the Master of Ceremonies at the 2004 Athletic Council banquet. Jamie was also awarded the Excellence in Education Award, presented by the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation to the graduating student who excels in school citizenship, leadership, participation and academics. She was also honoured with the 2004 Port Colborne Wainfleet Chamber of Commerce Youth Citizen of the Year. Jamie has a keen interest in the arts, specifically singing and acting - she is a member of the Broadway Musical Society and was cast in her Youth Group musical “Godspell”, where they have taken their rendition of the play to Britain last summer.
