Canadian Golf Tour's Greater Vancouver Charity Classic Day Three Summary
Adam Speirs carded a 3 under par 69 on Saturday to carry a one shot lead over Derek Gillespie into the final round of the Greater Vancouver Charity Classic.
Gillespie made ten birdies in his course record 62, including five in a row starting at the seventh hole.
Canadian Wes Heffernan went out in 32 and closed with a 67 to share third spot with Byron Smith.
In fifth spot are Joe Lanza (68) and Montana's Mike Grob who shot 69.
Australian Adam Bland fired a 67 on AMJ Campbell Moving Day to share seventh spot with Brad Heaven who slipped to a 73.
John Ellis (66), Ryan Carter (69), Ben Fox (70) and Canadians Kent Eger (69), Bryn Parry (70), Graham DeLaet (71) and also first round co-leader James Lepp (72) are in a share of ninth.
Speirs started his day rather inauspiciously with a double-bogey at the second hole before a birdie at the fifth to move back to even for the day.
He had another three-birdie run starting at the tenth before making his final birdie at 15.
"I kind of want to talk about the birdies," said Speirs in a friendly tone, when asked about his start.
"No.I just made a bad swing off the tee. I hit it left and got in trouble right away and made double.
"I righted the ship with the birdie at the fifth and then made those three starting at the tenth.
"There's a stretch of birdie holes on the back side. I hit a nice iron to about 15 feet on the tenth and then hit a 90-yard wedge to six inches at 11 to get to 1 under for the day.
"I hit another nice wedge to about 3 feet at 12 for birdie and made another 15-footer at the 15th hole.
"I'm feeling pretty good," continued Speirs. "I'd love to go right back out there and play again.
"The leaderboard is stacked with some big names and we're all going to be gunning tomorrow. I think you'll see some low scores.
"Derek Gillespie and I have known each other about ten years and I know he'll be going for it when we play together.
"I've got him by a shot but he's not going to sit back and I won't either."
"This round just kind of snuck up on me," said Gillespie of his course record.
"I found something good in my swing halfway through yesterday's round and then it was there again on the range this morning.
"After my birdie at the second from 12 feet I missed a five-footer for birdie at the third and that got me a little ticked off.
"I birdied four and five and when I got to 4 under after making another one at the seventh I knew I had something going.
"I was in a good mindset and made a 30-foot bomb at the eighth and just kept it going."
With laser-like precision, Gillespie did just that as he continued to attack the flags and the putts kept dropping from seemingly everywhere.
"Both the ninth and the tenth hole were from about 12 feet," continued Gillespie, "and the birdie at 11 was a 15-footer.
"I almost chipped in for eagle at 14 after making birdie at 13 and I told my caddie that if we make three of four coming in we've got a 59."
Although he didn't get his 59, Gillespie feels his confidence returning.
"It was one of those days where everything went well and I didn't hit a bad shot all day."
"This is a funny game," he continued. "Some days I'm hitting it straight and others I'm in the bushes and in the water all day.
"My Canadian Tour season has been a disaster so far but this feels really good. I'm looking forward to playing with Speirsy tomorrow.
"You can't force things too much on this course but we'll both be going for it tomorrow. I didn't come here to finish second."
Byron Smith followed his 65 was a 69 to move into contention at 206. "It was a good, clean day," said the 2007 Player of the Year.
"I got a bit stymied at the fifth when I ended up under a tree and made bogey there. I also burned the edge of the cup on 16 for par but other than that it was a very good afternoon.
"I'm feeling good out there and it feels good to be in contention. In some ways it's hard to follow a 65 with another low round because it's a new day but at the same time there is the momentum.
"I tend to put myself under additional pressure because of how I did last year but that is the kind of pressure you want," explained Smith.
"You want to feel the pressure of being in contention."
Gillespie's 10 under par 62 is two better than the previous course record held by Philip Jonas.
