Canadian Senior Match-Play Results
American Donald Marsh of Alpharetta, Ga. defeated Joel Hirsch of Chicago, Ill, 1-up to claim the 2007 Canadian Senior Match-Play Championship at Eagles Glenn Resort in Cavendish, P.E.I.
Marsh and Hirsch battled back-and-forth throughout the 18-hole match with neither competitor ever going more then 2-up on the other.
The turning point came on the par-3, 170-yard 17th hole. Both competitors hit identical tee-shots with Hirsch’s shot sitting slightly closer than Marsh. Putting first, the 62–year old Marsh, put the pressure on as he dropped his 10 footer. Hirsch couldn’t replicate the putt, missing short, giving Marsh a 1-up standing heading into the final hole. On the 18th, both players made par paving the way for Marsh’s victory.
Marsh, ranked in qualifying as the No. 24 seed, was the underdog all week pulling off upset after upset to claim his first Canadian title. He ousted five of the top-15 seeds including the fifth, eighth and ninth seeds on route to beating the 14th seeded Hirsch in today’s final.
Hirsch, a two-time British Senior Amateur Champion in 1996 and 2000, was also a runner-up at the Canadian Senior Match-Play championship in 2002 and is now the first person to have played in the final two or more times without winning. Yesterday, Marsh also knocked off another runner-up besting Jack Ramsey of Germantown, Tenn. in the semi-finals.
With the win, Marsh, the number 4th ranked Senior Amateur by Golfweek, has earned a coveted exemption into the 2007 USGA Senior Men’s Championship contested September 1-6 at Flint Hills National Golf Course in Andover, Kan.
On Saturday the remaining Canadians were eliminated from play during the quarterfinals. Merv Dusyk of Red Deer, Alta. and Terry Campbell of Victoria, BC both advanced to the quarter final round before bowing out. Amateur legend Graham Cooke of Hudson, Que. and Howard Broun of Calgary were the top seeded Canadians heading into match play finishing tied for second in stroke play qualifying – both were upset in their opening round matches.
This was the eighth straight year a Canadian did not hoist the Canadian Senior Match-Play trophy and sixth consecutive year the championship final featured two American competitors. The last time a Canadian played in the final was in 2001 when Saskatoon’s James Scissons lost to American Todd Lusk.
Only two Canadians have ever captured the Canadian Senior Match-Play Championship in its 11 year history. Robert Fugère of Hull, Que., won the title in 1999 while George Stokes of Victoria, B.C., won in 1997.
