Canadian Tour Arrives In Mexico For Mexican PGA Championship

The Canadian Tour travels to beautiful Mazatlan, Mexico for the Corona Mazatlan Mexican PGA Championship from April 21-27, 2008. The 72-hole tournament, held at the El Cid Golf & Country Club, features a full field of 156 competitors.

First played in 1953, the historic Mexican PGA Championship was revived by the Canadian Tour in 2007. The tournament boasts an impressive list of past champions. Argentina’s Roberto de Vicenzo won the event five times with Victor Regalado and Antonio Cerda adding their names to the trophy on one occasion.

In 2007, Byron Smith defeated Scott Hawley to earn his first Canadian Tour victory.

With its palm tree lined fairways and sculpted bunkers, El Cid Golf & Country Club was a Golf Digest “Places to Play” selection from 1998 - 2002.

As an added bonus, the winner receives an exemption into the Nationwide Tour’s 2009 Mexican Open.

The 6,623 - yard layout plays to a par 72.

Players to Watch

Byron Smith
The defending champion is off to a strong start this season. He finished T-6th at Modesto and T-4th last week in Stockton. Smith also won the Jane Rogers Championship last season where he closed with a 63 to overtake the pack. The California native lost a playoff at the Desjardins Montreal Open to Brent Schwarzrock. At the Canadian Tour Championship, Smith fired a course record 62 on Sunday to finish second to Bret Guetz.

John Ellis
Won the Stockton Sports Commission Classic last week in a playoff over Tommy Barber. Trailed by two strokes with three holes to play but caught Barber with a birdie on the final hole and then birdied the first playoff hole for the title. One of the most consistent players on the Canadian Tour, Ellis rarely shoots a high number and his name always seems to be on the leaderboard. His win has him riding a wave of confidence coming into Mexico.

Dustin Risdon
Finished fourth at Stockton and won the TELUS Edmonton last summer. The Canadian winner of the Bursary last season has turned his game up a notch in the past year and is ready to win again.

Tommy Barber
Missed the cut in Modesto and then lost in a playoff to John Ellis last week. Started the week off with a 73 and then shot rounds of 65-66-68 to land in the playoff. Credits the return to a familiar driver as the reason for his turnaround.

Other Notables:
Troy Kelly, Adam Bland, Eugene Smith, Joe Lanza, Antonio Maldonado, Brent Schwarzrock, Mike Grob.
