Chan and Calsin Murdoch lead 2009 BC Bantam Boys' and Girls' Championships

HOPE, BC (August 20, 2009) – Curtis Chan of Richmond, B.C. fired a 1-under par 70 to take the lead after day one at the 2009 B.C. Bantam Boys’ Championship.

Donald Qiu of Richmond, B.C. is alone in second at even par. Oscar Baek of Coquitlam sits at 1-over par 72 for third followed by Brandon Ortiz of Westbank, B.C. at 3-over par 74 for fourth.

In the 2009 B.C. Bantam Girls’ Championship, Nayan Calsin Murdoch takes the clubhouse lead at 2-over par 74.

“The course is much tougher than I expected,” says Calsin Murdoch. “My putter was better than usual today and that really helped me out.”

Grace Chua of Surrey, B.C. and defending champion Alix Kong of Westbank, B.C. share a piece of second place at 4-over par 76 while Ally Shin of port Moody, B.C. is in fourth at 6-over par 78.

Conducted since 2002, the Bantam Boys’ Championship is becoming an important stepping stone for boys entering amateur competition in the province. The Bantam Girls’ Championship began in 2003 and has been building its list of competitors every year as more girls pick up the sport.

The BC Bantam Championships are 36-hole stroke play gross competitions. The boys are competing in the BC Boys Bantam Championship and the girls in the BC Girls’ Bantam Championship. Players must not have reached their 14th birthday by the final day of the championship.

The final round commences Friday August 21, 2009 at 9:00 am with a shotgun start.

The B.C. Girls’ and Boys’ Bantam Championship is one of 13 provincial championships conducted annually by the BCGA. A full listing of players, the leaderboard, starting times and post-round results can be found on the BCGA website at www.bcga.org.
