DOUG ROXBURGH TO RETIRE FROM GOLF CANADA

Canadian Golf Hall of Famer steps away after 12 years as Director of High Performance

Oakville, Ont. (Golf Canada) – After 12 years helping to identify and develop Canada’s most promising amateur golfers, Doug Roxburgh will be retiring from Golf Canada as of December 31, 2011.

Roxburgh joined Golf Canada’s High Performance Program in 1999 and has been a driving force behind the identification and development of Canada’s most promising amateur golfers over the past 12 years.

During his tenure in the role of Director of High Performance Roxburgh has been a significant part of Golf Canada’s evolution within the area of player development, which began in 1995 with the Association running player camps across the country. In his time with Golf Canada’s High Performance Program, he has helped provide hundreds of Canada’s most promising golfers with advanced coaching, sport science expertise, training camps and world-class competition.

In addition to leading Golf Canada’s High Performance Program, Roxburgh also played an instrumental role in the ongoing development of CN Future Links – Canada’s national junior golf program – and has been a leader in Canada’s junior high performance strategy. He was also involved in the development of Canada’s Long-Term Player Development Guide for golf and has been a major contributor to the success of Golf Canada’s National Team program which offers full time player support services from training and coaching to competitive opportunities and support in the areas of nutrition, physiotherapy, strength and conditioning and mental performance.

“My time with Golf Canada’s High Performance Program has been extremely rewarding both personally and professionally,” said Roxburgh. “I’ve had the opportunity to work with some of this country’s most gifted young athletes as well as an incredible number of very committed coaches and administrators determined to build Canada into a leading golf nation. It is a difficult decision to step away as Golf Canada heads toward exciting new competitions such as the Pan Am and Olympic Games however, it is the right one as the Association begins this next phase of player development. I will miss my time working every day with the great staff and volunteers at Golf Canada, the Provincial Golf Associations and PGA of Canada and I look forward to the continued success of Canada’s top athletes for many years to come – I will be watching their progress with eager anticipation.”

One of Canada’s pre-eminent amateur competitors, Roxburgh is synonymous with golfing excellence, having amassed numerous provincial, national and international victories throughout his celebrated 40-year amateur golfing career.

Inducted into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame in 1990, Roxburgh’s accomplished amateur career spans nearly four decades. He won the 1970 Canadian Junior Championship and is a four-time Canadian Amateur champion (1972, 1974, 1982, and 1988). A golf legend in British Columbia, Roxburgh is a former two-time B.C. Junior champion (1969, 1970); a 13-time B.C. Amateur champion (1969, 1972, 1973, 1976-1978, 1983, 1985, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1995, 1996); and a member of 21 B.C. Willingdon Cup teams.

Among this country’s most respected and accomplished amateur golfers, Roxburgh is the epitome of excellence in Canadian amateur golf. He has represented Canada at numerous international team and individual competitions throughout his playing career including seven World Amateur Team Championships (1972, 1974, 1976, 1978, 1988, 1990 and 1992).

A longtime member at Marine Drive Golf Club in Vancouver, Roxburgh is also an honoured member of the British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame (1995), the British Columbia Golf Hall of Fame (2003) and Pacific Northwest Golf Association Hall of Fame (2011).

“As a competitor and an administrator, Doug Roxburgh has been an outstanding ambassador for Canada and a driving force behind high performance golf in this country,” said Golf Canada Executive Director and CEO Scott Simmons. “His contributions to the game and leadership in the areas of long term player development, junior competition and high performance have been simply outstanding. Throughout his career, he has earned the respect of his peers and fellow golfers in Canada and around the world. On behalf of Golf Canada and the many athletes he’s helped and mentored throughout his career, we want to wish Doug the very best of success in his retirement.”

Born December 28, 1951, Roxburgh is a 1975 graduate of Simon Fraser University in Vancouver where he majored in business. Prior to joining Golf Canada, he was employed in management roles with Eaglequest Golf Centres and Belmont Golf Course (Langley, BC) and before that as a Controller in the freight industry.

Roxburgh will remain in his position as Director, High Performance with Team Canada full time until December 31, 2011. Following his retirement, he will assume a consulting role with Golf Canada’s High Performance Program.
