Oakville, Ont. (RCGA) – Graham DeLaet of Weyburn Sask. overcame one of golf’s most grueling tests to finish eighth at this week’s PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament at Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla. to secure his 2010 PGA TOUR card.
DeLaet headed into the final round of the six round, 108-hole tournament in second spot and shot a final round 1-over 73 to finish tied for eighth at 15-under.
A graduate of both the CN Future Links Junior Program and the RCGA’s National Amateur Team Program, DeLaet will join fellow Canadians Mike Weir of Bright’s Grove, Ont., Stephen Ames of Calgary and Chris Baryla of Calgary on the 2010 PGA TOUR.
Eight other Canadians joined DeLaet at final PGA TOUR Q-school including Baryla who was one of 25 Nationwide Tour players to secure their 2010 PGA TOUR card at the season-ending Nationwide Tour Championship at Daniel Island in Charleston, S.C. by finishing among the year's top-25 money winners. Baryla, who was looking to upgrade his PGA TOUR status for 2010 by finishing in the top-25 at Q-School, finished the week tied for 42nd at 5-under.
Q-School, also known as the PGA TOUR’s National Qualifying, was contested over a six-round, 108 hole marathon event where only the low 25 scores and ties earn their PGA TOUR cards for 2010. The rest of the field competing in the final stage of Q-school will have some degree of status on the Nationwide Tour.
Seven other Canadians competed at final Q-School including Montreal’s Julien Trudeau (T26, 2-under) who narrowly missed the top-25 and ties that secured their 2010 Tour cards. Other Canadian results include Ted Brown of Peterborough, Ont. (T42, 5-under); Barrett Jarosch of Edmonton (T64, 3-under); Dustin Risdon of Calgary (T104, 4-over); Former PGA Tour members David Hearn of Brantford, Ont. (T78, 1-under) and Jon Mills of Belleville, Ont. (T98, 2-over); and Keven Fortin-Simard of Montreal (147, 15-over).
With their finishes at Q-school, Trudeau, Brown and Jarosch as well as Hearn, Risdon and Mills have earned either full or conditional playing status 2010 Nationwide Tour.
DeLaet, Baryla, Risdon, Fortin-Simard, Trudeau, Brown, Jarosch, Hearn and Mills have all either represented Team Canada internationally or have participated in some aspect of the RCGA’s High Performance Player Development Program.
Meldrum Earns 2010 LPGA Tour Card
The LPGA Tour also concluded its final qualifying Tournament Monday where Lisa Meldrum of Montreal became the third Canadian of the year to earn an LPGA Tour card for the 2010 season. Meldrum finished tied for fifth at the weather delayed event which took place at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The 27-year old shot a one-under par 71 today to finish at five-under par, only four-shots off medalist Amanda Blumenherst.
An alumnae of the CN Canadian Women’s Tour, Canada’s only developmental golf circuit for women, Meldrum won the Tour’s Championship and topped its Order of Merit in 2006.
Before turning professional in 2004, Meldrum enjoyed a standout career as an amateur golfer. She is a three-time Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur champion (2001-2003), and also won the Royale Cup Canadian Junior Girls Championship in 2000.
Meldrum earned herself entry into the final stages of LPGA Tour qualifying after finishing 15th on the Duramed Futures Tour season ending money list, which was largely due to her win at the Tour’s iMPACT Classic.
Meldrum will join Samantha Richdale of Kelowna, B.C., Angela Buzminski of Oshawa, Ont., Lorie Kane of Charlottetown, P.E.I. and Alena Sharp of Hamilton on the 2010 LPGA Tour.
Richdale and Buzminski were among ten Duramed FUTURES Tour players who earned automatic exemptions into the LPGA Tour next season by finishing in the top-10 on the Duramed Futures Tour season money list.
Five other Canadians competed at the final stage of LPGA Tour Q-School including Adrienne White of Red Deer, Alta. (T22, +1); Jessica Shepley of Oakville, Ont. (T32, +3); Kirby Dreher of Fort St. John, B.C. (T43,+6); Izzy Beisiegel of Montreal (T58,+8) and Cristina Lecuyer of Edmonton who missed the event’s 72 hole cut after tallying 14-over par.
With her T22 finish, White earns non-exempt LPGA Tour playing status for 2010 while Shepley also enters next season with conditional LPGA Tour membership.
