Greiner Scotland-Bound After MJT’s Brandt Levers Memorial
The weather was hot on day one with little wind and the Lacombe golf course in great shape, considering the past weather, for the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) Brandt Levers Memorial tournament this past long weekend. Scores were good starting out, but the second day was where everything was going to be decided among the full field of competitive young golfers, with the rain coming in before the tournament and strong winds gusting to 40km/h, causing some havoc for full shots.
Brett Greiner, 16, of Calgary, shot back-to-back 73’s in difficult conditions to capture the Boys 14-16 division title as well as the low overall score for the field. “Playing MJT helps my game because of the tournament atmosphere where you get the nerves you don’t normally get in a round of golf – and there are good players,” said Greiner, who earns the spot up for grabs on MJT Team Canada to the Scotland Kingdom of Fife Team Matches in St. Andrews, U.K., this August. “I know that I played the way I wanted to for two days and I’m very glad about the outcome.” Scott Malo, 16, also of Calgary, placed second in the division three strokes back of Greiner at 75-74 (149), and Ryan Werre, 16, of Redcliff, took third place (76-75=151). Fifteen players tied their scores in this ultra-competitive division.
Craig Bloom, 17, of Calgary, hung on to win the Boys 17 and up division, edging Chase Teron, 18, of Red Deer by one stroke. “My goals are to get better every event,” said Bloom, who shot 74-77 (151). “It’s nice (to win), a good start to the season.” Teron triple-bogeyed the 17th hole to let it slip away, finishing second with scores of 75-77 (152). Third place went to MJT veteran Jace Barros, 18, of Edmonton, who posted a pair of 77’s for a 154 total score.
In the Boys 13 and under division, Mikkel Holt, 13, of Athabasca, and Patrick Murphy, 11, of Crossfield, came down the stretch in a tight match with Holt coming out on top by one shot after Murphy had the opportunity to tie on the 36th hole. “The highlight for me was coming down the stretch and not blowing up!” said Holt, who fired 77-76 (153). Murphy shot 78-76 (154). Finishing third in the division was first round leader Jesse Teron, 13, of Red Deer (76-81=157).\
Jessica MacKinnon, 16, of Calgary, played steady golf throughout day two to surpass first round leader Evann Parker, 16, also of Calgary, and claim victory by three shots. Parker shot 82-86 to tie for second place with Kylie Barros, 16, of Edmonton (87-81). “I got to play with some really good friends in the last group, “ said MacKinnon, after posting rounds of 83-82 (165). “This win helps keep Brandt’s memory for me.” Brandt Levers was a two-time champion at the MJT’s Lacombe tournament before his untimely death in 2007.
Divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Jerrod Parker, 13, of Calgary, and Edmontonians Connor O’Reilly, 16, Will Parker, and Emily Miles, 17. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Patrick Murphy, Derek Rucki, 14, of Chestermere, Gage Murphy, 17, of Rosebud, and Jennifer MacKinnon.
