Lorna Miedema wins the CPGA Women's Championship

Burlington, ON (August 10, 2005) It took 10 long years and a two hour and 12 minute rain delay but it was well worth the wait for Lorna Miedema. The 42-year-old who came out of retirement this year fired a one-under-par 70 to win the Canadian PGA Women’s Championship presented by AQUAFINA® bottled water.

Miedema won her first CPGA National Championship and BMO Financial Group Canadian Women’s Tour event at the par 71 Burlington Golf and Country Club.

“This feels absolutely fantastic!” described Miedema, on winning her first tournament since the 1994 du Maurier event in Saskatoon. “I think any gal out here anticipates and hopes that they will win. I just happen to be that lucky one this week.”

Miedena was red hot on the front nine, racking up five birdies and one bogey before play was suspended at 2:08 due to rain and lightning. At that point, she was seven-under for the tournament through 10 holes, six shots better than her nearest competitor.

“My back was really bothering me at the seventh hole,” stated Miedema, who was able to relax on a couch during the rain delay. “I was able to stretch myself out and take a bit of a nap.”

Miedema and the rest of the field returned to the course at 4:25 pm to battle it out for the $39,500 purse.

A bogey on 11 was wiped out with a birdie on 15. She had a rocky finish with a double bogey on 17 and a bogey on 18.

“I had an awkward approach shot on 17 and ended up three putting. I got nervous on 18 and three-putted there too. I was trying to do the proverbial ‘one shot at a time’. I was bleeding on the last two holes coming in.”

The Calgary native took home a $7,110 first-place cheque.

Ten years ago, Miedema’s career was ended after being struck by a golf cart. Last winter, she starting hitting balls again and re-hired her golf coach, Herbie Triplett.

She has played in handful of events this year, including three tournaments on the Futures Tour (where she has missed the cut) and she tied for 48th at the BMO Financial Group Canadian Women’s at Cordova Bay in Victoria, BC.

“I’m a firm believer in destiny and I’ve grown enormously over the past 10 years,” said Miedema, reflecting back on her accident and how it took her out of the game. “I don’t regret not playing for 10 years and I’m grateful that I could play today. I didn’t get here alone. I have a lot of friends, coaches, trainers who are my support beams. This is just amazing!”

Finishing two shots back in second at two-under-140 was Marie-Josee Rouleau of St. Lambert, PQ. Rouleau carded a one-under-70. Kareen Qually (71-70) of Calgary, AB, and 2004 champion Alena Sharp (72-69) of Hamilton, ON, finished tied for third at 141.

“I felt a bit sluggish out there,” stated Sharp. “I wasn’t hitting it close and was three over after the first four holes. But I went out there and shot five-under on the last 14 holes. I’m happy with how I finished.”

The low amateur score was 151 by Karly Pinder (77-74) of Exeter, ON, Seema Sadekar (75-76) of Stouffville, ON, and Nicole Vandermade (75-76) of Brantford, ON.
