2010 CHILLIWACK OPEN - Chilliwack Golf Club - July 17,18th
“PARRY DEFENDS HIS CHILLIWACK CROWN”
For the second consecutive year, past Nationwide Tour Professional Bryn Parry was crowned CHILLIWACK OPEN CHAMPION, edging Professionals Phil Jonas and James Harper on the first playoff hole with a clutch 4-foot putt for birdie.
After a 3-way tie at -2 from Professionals Bryn Parry, Galen Johnston and Kyle German after the opening round, the 2010 Chilliwack Open turned out to be a dramatic conclusion that everyone in attendance would enjoy and remember for quite some time.
With a few holes to play it came down to a four player race between Parry, Jonas, German and Harper to see who could close out their rounds and become the Champion. Two groups ahead of the final group, McCleery’s James Harper was playing some very steady golf, taking his round to 3-under par with 3 holes to go. Although he hit some great closing shots in on #16 and #18, he couldn’t capitalize on his birdie chances, and so would become the clubhouse leader at 3-under par after a great round of 68 on the day.
Next coming in was Hazelmere’s Phil Jonas, who started the day at 1-under and had a nice round going himself. After an untimely bogey on the 16th and a missed 15 footer for birdie on the 17th, Jonas faced a 6 foot par saver to reach the playoff with Harper who sat watching from the clubhouse patio. Jonas clutched up and made his 6-footer and he now sat tied with Harper in a share of the lead with the final group to come in. With Johnston out of contention after having a tough day, it came down to Parry and German to see who would possibly join the playoff, or take this tournament outright. After bogeying the 16th, German had fell to 2-under par for the event and now required a birdie to tie Harper and Jonas. But after his approach came up a few yards short and his pitch narrowly missed, German would fall shy of the playoff by one shot.
Parry’s card was fairly unblemished on the day. Other than trading a couple of bogeys and birdies on the front nine, Parry went on to make a super birdie on the difficult 12th hole par 3. This put him to 3-under for the tournament, which he would remain at strolling down the 18th fairway. After a par at the last, all three (Parry, Jonas, Harper) finished the tournament tied with score of 3-under par - a score typically quite high for the winner of this event, but which was inevitably caused by the British Open–like conditions that were experienced on both days. “With the greens as firm and the wind doing what it was doing this weekend, it made scoring very difficult. You had to do a lot of calculating as to where you wanted to land a lot of your shots in order to keep the ball on the green and have a chance for par, let alone a birdie” Parry was quoted after the round.
Parry’s 4-footer on the 15th hole in the playoff to win the tournament was only slightly less dramatic than the 20-footer he drained on the 36th hole to get him into the playoff. You see, we forgot to mention HOW Parry made his par on the last hole to reach the playoff! After a perfect drive, Parry hit a great shot to 15 feet on the last hole which if he holed for birdie would have won him the tournament outright. But when his ball slipped 3 feet past the hole, it caught the front slope of the green and continued to trickle farther and farther from the hole until it stopped at the front of the green some 20 feet away. But with determination we’ve seen so often before from this 38-year old North Vancouver Professional, Parry drained his par putt dead center and eventually went on to win the tourney in sudden death.
Not only did Parry take home a miniature version of the Claret Jug in the spirit of the British Open week, but he also cut a healthy cheque for $2,000 and more importantly 2,500 points on this year’s CLEVELAND GOLF/SRIXON CANADA Order of Merit (OOM). This was Parry’s second win on the VGT schedule in 2010, but more remarkable was that this win made it the 10th time out of 13 events that Parry has finished in the top 3 this year!!! And so with his win, Parry surged himself even further ahead of his nearest competitor (Phil Jonas) on the 2010 CLEVELAND/SRIXON OOM.
With only three events remaining on the VGT schedule to decide who wins the Order of Merit Crown and who is sent down to PGA Tour Qualifying School courtesy of VGT, somebody is going to have to step up their game to knock off Parry who has unquestionably been VGT’s most consistent player the past three years! With the final three events holding some significant OOM points, this race is certainly not over!
AMATEUR RESULTS
As did the Professional side of the tournament, the Championship Amateur side of the Open came down to a sudden-death playoff between a couple of local boys, Brett Stewart of the Ledgeview Golf & Country Club and Chilliwack Golf Club’s own Mike Broadfoot. And after a short-range putt went in for birdie by the University of Fraser Valley Golf Team member, Stewart was crowned Overall Amateur Champion. Stewart’s 36-hole total of 145 (+3) earned him 2,500 VGT Order of Merit Points as well as a Samsung 42” Flat screen TV! Nice work Brett!
This year’s Overall Low Net winner went to Homestead Golf Course’s Neil Johnston, who carded a 36-hole net total of 137, edging out Sandpiper’s Richard Fife in retrogression. Johnston also took home a Samsung 42” flat screen for his great play.

The golf course was in brilliant condition and you should all be very proud of yourself for staging an excellent event!
