Mengel Cream of the Crop in MJT-CPGA Saskatchewan Junior Championship presented by Finora

Deer Valley, SK: Despite wind and pouring rain which almost threatened to shorten the tournament, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) CPGA of Saskatchewan Junior Championship successfully concluded yesterday at Deer Valley Golf and Estates near Regina.

The event was sponsored by Finora, a substantial Canadian based supplier and processor of beans, peas and lentils, and the cream of the crop was undoubtedly young Dallas Mengel who won the Boys 13 and under division and low overall tournament score.

Mengel, 13, of Watrous, has competed on the MJT since age eight and is a member of the Maple Leaf Team to Scotland. He shot 76-71 for a 147 total score to win his division title as well as claim low overall score. Mengel also harvested both the Mr. Lube Long Drive and Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin competitions in his division.

Second and third place in the division were claimed by Ryan O’Donnell, 12, of Lethbridge, AB, and Lucas Robinson, 12, of Deer Valley.

The Boys 14-16 champion was Mitchell Zaba, 16, of Deer Valley, who shot back-to-back rounds of 79 for a 158 total score. Tied for second in the division at 164 were Jay Smith, 16, of Regina, and Taylor Smith, 16, of Swift Current.

Tanner White, 17, of Fort Qu’Appelle, took the Boys 17 and up division title with rounds of 77-74 for a 151 total, seven strokes ahead of runner-up Andrew Zaba, 17, of Deer Valley. Third place in the division went to Brad Piero, 18, of Regina.

15-year-old Kelsey Klatt of Fort Qu-Appelle won the champion’s trophy amongst the Girls with rounds of 97-110, beating runner-up Kirsten Clarke, 16, of Regina, by five strokes. Breanna White, 14, of Fort Qu-Appelle, placed third.

Other winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Dalan Wheeler of Estevan in Boys 14-16, Tyler Zaba of Deer Valley in Boys 17 and up, and Kirsten Clarke in Girls. Chad Lavallee of Meadow Lake won the Boys 14-16 Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin competition, and Lucas Stefan of Deer Valley won in Boys 17 and up.

The MJT event was part of the Saskatchewan Golf Association’s (SGA) Junior Order of Merit, and was run by Jeff Chambers, SGA High Performance Coach and MJT Tournament Director.
