Harris Wins MJT Cleveland Golf Canada Scholarship

Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour player, Spencer Harris, 18, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, is the 2006 recipient of the $1,000 MJT Cleveland Golf Canada Scholarship.

Harris, who has played on the MJT for the past four years, is currently enrolled at the University of Manitoba and plans to graduate with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. As a two-time winner on the MJT in 2006 with a second-place standing on the overall MJT Cleveland Golf National Order of Merit for Boys 17 and up, Harris is an all-round achiever with interests in several sports, in addition to playing the saxophone and earning a black belt in karate.

“Success in all aspects of one’s life, be it further learning, work, family, relationships, will all require a good grasp of the skills I have learned from an early relationship with golf,” says Harris, who is a member of the University of Manitoba Bison’s Golf Team.

For the first time in 2006 the MJT has awarded a total of 10 applicants with funds towards their educational expenses, courtesy of the Wyndham Hotel Group’s fundraising efforts for the non-profit junior golf program. In addition to Spencer Harris, the following juniors will each receive $100.00: Steven Becker of Red Deer, Alberta, Chase Teron of Red Deer, Alberta, Brett Webster of Abbotsford, BC, Mitchell Lock of Mission, BC, Adrian Kibsey of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Nolan Hamilton of Calgary, Alberta, Kristina Gargaro of Port Moody, BC, Chad Lavallee of Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, and Danelle Girard of Coquitlam, BC.

Parents and juniors support this initiative by booking hotels on Wyndham's toll free reservation line and using the MJT's ID Code. Discounted rates are available at eight hotel chains in North America, year-round.

As a not-for-profit association, the national Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) is presented by Boston Pizza and helps develop Canada's junior golfers, offering clinics, tournaments, international competitions and more. Now entering its ninth season, the MJT is proud to provide juniors with high level international opportunities that take the game far beyond the course and highlight the program’s purpose of developing champions – in golf and in life. From free introductory clinics sponsored by Ford to 40 tournaments across Canada, the MJT offers a quality experience for players. For more information please visit www.maplejt.com.
