MJT’s Kootenay Classic Plays Out In Blazing Heat

Junior golfers from BC, Alberta and the States competed in blazing heat during the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Kootenay Classic this past weekend at St. Eugene Mission Golf Resort in Cranbrook, BC. The course was in outstanding shape in the 35 degree weather - the greens were quick but held the ball, fairways were cut down and the rough was long but fair.

Travis Kemp from Lethbridge, AB, and Jordan Orth from Cranbrook, BC, tied over the two days of competition for the low overall score in the field (146), taking home the champion titles in their respective divisions of Boys 14-16 and Boys 17 and up.

Kemp, 16, closed with the low score of the day – 70 – to beat first round leader Evan Cowan in Boys 14-16. “I had two good, solid rounds; I tried to keep it going,” said Kemp, who shot 76-70 to win by two strokes. Cowan, 14, of Coaldale, AB, fired 75-73 (148) to finish second on the very difficult course, while third place in the division went to Craig Klassen, 16, of Calgary, AB (78-72=150).

Local resident Orth, 17, shot 74-72 to beat Will Porter, 18, of Coaldale, AB, by six strokes in the Boys 17 and up division. “My putting was soooo good!” he said. “I hope to play well in the BC Amateur, so the MJT helps me prepare.” According to Porter, Orth “made everything.” Porter fired back-to-back rounds of 76 to finish second, and Jason Sperr, 20, of Stanfield, Oregon, came third after scoring 77-76 (153).

In the Boys 13 and under, Ryan O’Donnell, 13, of Lethbridge, AB, captured his first MJT title after posting a career-low tournament score of 80 during day two to finish at 84-80 (164). “I shot my lowest score ever!” he said. “It’s my first win ever on the MJT and it feels good because you know you can get it done. I play on the MJT because it teaches me rules - how to play better golf, and I meet friends. Right now my goal is to get my stroke average to be 77 or less by the end of the year.”

Runner-up to O’Donnell was Sean Moen, 13, of North Vancouver, BC, who shot 85-90 (175) while Riley Fleming, 12, of Airdrie, AB, was third (90-99=189).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Sean Moen, Eric Brinkworth, 16, of Calgary, AB, and Will Porter. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Moen again, Travis Kemp and Dale Stypula, 18, of Cranbrook, BC.

The MJT continues its British Columbia schedule on July 10th and 11th with the MJT Cattermole Timber Classic at Chilliwack Golf Club in Chilliwack, BC, and its Alberta schedule on July 24th, 25th and 26th with the Alberta PGA Junior Championship at Carstairs Golf Club in Carstairs, AB.
