Marketplace IGA VANCOUVER GOLF TOUR announces MAJOR SPONSORS for the 2010 Vancouver Open

The Marketplace IGA Vancouver Golf Tour is excited to announce CALLINAN MINES and PAINE EDMONDS LAWYERS as TITLE and PRESENTING SPONSORS of the 2010 Vancouver Open and SAPUTO as a MAJOR SPONSOR. With this new-found sponsorship, the 2010 VANCOUVER OPEN will offer a total of $65,000 in CASH and PRIZES for its expected 300 Pro-am and Championship Golfers, up $20,000 from 2009!!!

“Thanks to the support of CALLINAN MINES, PAINE EDMONDS LAWYERS and SAPUTO we are projecting a Professional Purse of $40,000 (up from $20,000 in 2009) and a commitment to raising significant funds for Charity states VGT Commissioner Fraser Mulholland. “This sponsorship has allowed us to meet a lot of our goals for the event so far”.

“The first thing we have been able to accomplish is to raise the Professional Purse of the event significantly so that top Professionals from BC and neighboring Alberta and Washington State will make the trip to Vancouver to compete. With a first place cheque of $10,000 and the total purse at $40,000 this will certainly get some top players outside the province travelling to Vancouver. With the Canadian Tour schedule completing at the end of August, we are already beginning to attract many of the West Coast players on the Can Tour who will be looking for events to play leading up to the PGA Tour Qualifying School. By raising the purse we will no doubt have the strongest field in Vancouver Open history” states Mulholland.

“We’re very pleased to have the opportunity to be part of developing Amateur and Professional golf in BC” states Callinan Mines representative Braden Maccke. “We’re looking forward to a successful open, and being a part of a successful tour with VGT. I would also like to invite anyone who hasn’t previously had an opportunity to watch the Van Open event to come down and watch some of BC’s finest golfers at work”.

The second mandate of the Open is to continue to raise funds for charity. Thanks to our Major Sponsors and to our media partner CKNW, this can thankfully be accomplished. Proceeds from the Charity Pro-am (silent auction, putting contest, 50/50) will go directly to the CKNW ORPHAN’S FUND and initiatives leading up to and during the tournament including ticket and merchandise sales will go to help underprivileged youth wanting to play golf through a donation to the FIRST TEE of VANCOUVER.

"Paine Edmonds is pleased to be the Presenting Sponsor of the Vancouver Open this year at Vancouver Parks' wonderful courses, Fraserview, Langara and McCleery states Paine Edmonds’ Lawyer Brad Garside. “Last year we sponsored the Charity Pro-am part of the Vancouver Open in support of the Orphan's Fund. That event was such a great success that we stepped up this year to be the Presenting Sponsor of the entire Vancouver Open”.

“Paine Edmonds is proud to be one of the original sponsors of the Vancouver Golf Tour since 2006. We enjoy presenting the opening VGT event each year (the Brad Garside/Paine Edmonds LLP Open) and we look forward to continuing our partnership with Fraser Mulholland and the Vancouver Golf Tour in bringing the best Professional and Amateur golf competition to the Lower Mainland."

The third initiative at this year’s Open will be to continue growing the game of golf by offering a free junior golf clinic at the tournament. Special thanks to The Golf Institute at Fraserview’s (www.TGIFraserview.com) Director of Coaching Mark Burke for initiating this opportunity.

VAN OPEN PLAYER COMMITMENTS
Due to the strength of the field, the 2010 Vancouver Open is sure to attract more media and spectator involvement. Early commitments to play in this year’s Vancouver Open come from 2009 Van Open Champion Bryn Parry (current VGT Order of Merit Leader) and 2009 Runner-up Phil Jonas of McCleery and Hazelmere.

A fresh face to the scene that will be an exciting addition to the field is Rookie Canadian Tour Member Adam Hadwin who finished 2nd on the 2009 VGT CLEVELAND/SRIXON Order of Merit. Hadwin has been on fire since graduating to the Canadian Tour this year, twice finishing second on the Can Tour and gaining a spot into the Nationwide Tour’s Gretzky Classic two weeks ago (finishing 27th). Hadwin has also been granted a special exemption into this week’s RBC Canadian Open (www.rbccanadianopen.com) at St. George’s Golf Club via his top 6 finish on the Can Tour Order of Merit.

Rounding out the field are fellow Canadian Tour members Stuart Anderson (2-time World Cup player), Darren Griff, James Allenby, Ryan Williams, Oliver Tubb, Devin Carrey and Matt Daniel.

The Vancouver Open is the final event on the Vancouver Golf Tour Schedule used to determine who wins the $5,000 U.S. entry down to PGA Tour Qualifying School for winning the ’10 Order of Merit. With a lot of Western Canada’s best professionals in the field it should be an exciting 54-hole tournament to watch.

“We are very excited to be back for the next three years at the Vancouver Parks Golf courses,” stated Fraser Mulholland, Commissioner of the Vancouver Golf Tour. With a Saturday finish at this year’s event I think we can expect record crowds to be watching Western Canada’s next PGA Tour hopefuls,” he added.

The 2010 Vancouver City Open runs September 9th to 11th, beginning with the CKNW Charity Pro-Am at Fraserview Golf Course on Thursday, Sept.9th and concluding with the final round at McCleery Golf Course on Saturday. The 54-Hole Championship is open for both Professionals and Amateurs with registered RCGA Factors of +4 to 18 and the 18 hole Charity Pro-am is open for Amateurs with handicaps from 0-36. Details on spectator admission and how to register for the 2010 event can be found online at www.vancouveropen.ca.
