Morrison Wins MJT Geocan Energy Classic With 5-Under-Par

The final regular season stop in Alberta on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) ran August 8th and 9th at McKenzie Meadows Golf Club in Calgary, AB, where GEOCAN Energy Inc. sponsored the two day tournament for the second year in a row.

Kyle Morrison, 19, of Red Deer, AB, and River Bend Golf Club, breezed to victory with his five-under-par total of 139, blitzing the course with rounds of 70-69 and taking low overall honours as well as the Boys 17 and up division title. “I want to win the stroke average,” he said, referring to the MJT’s Cleveland Golf Player of the Year award which goes to the lowest stroke average in each division at the end of the season. “I made lots of pars, few bogeys. I feel pretty good – this year I’ve placed first, tie-third and first in three MJT tournaments.”

Morrison listed the competitor who worried him the most as Patrick O’Doherty, 17, of Calgary, AB, who ended up firing rounds of 73-74 (147) to finish second in the division. Third place went to Brody Knight, 20, of Lacombe, AB, who shot 75-73 (148).

Evan Cowan, 14, of Coaldale, AB, and Land-O-Lakes Golf Club, is enjoying a stellar season on the MJT, going from dominating the Boys 13 and under to dominating the Boys 14-16 division for his fifth win of the year. Cowan shot 73-69 for a two-under-par total of 142. “I wanted to have five wins,” he said, narrowly achieving his goal with a one-stroke victory over both Dallas Mengel, 15, of Watrous, SK, and Jack Wesche, 16, of Calgary, who tied for second spot at 143 total score. Mengel shot 74-69 while Wesche followed up his spectacular opening round of 67 with a 76. Cowan added, referring to the MJT Boston Pizza National Tour Championship in Whistler on August 28th and 29th, “This builds my confidence for Whistler. It’s never over ‘til it’s over – I was six strokes behind and I got it done.”

Riley Fleming, 13, of Airdrie, AB, and Callicutt Siding Golf Club, shot his lowest round ever of 76 to win his first MJT event with scores of 76-85 (161) in the Boys 13 and under division. “I wanted to win one tournament,” he said. “Winning the KP (Sundog closest-to-the-pin competition) was good. This win gives me confidence going to Whistler.” Travis Neil, 13, of Calgary, took second place in the division with scores of 84-85 (169), while third spot went to 11-year-old Brayden Brown, also of Calgary (84-92=176).

Cecilia Jeon, 14, of Calgary was the sole girl in the 60-player field, and shot decent rounds of 79-82 for a 161 total score.

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Travis Neil, Matthew Whittaker, 14, of Lethbridge, AB, and Shale Anderson, 17, of Calgary. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Riley Fleming, Evan Cowan and Lee Geers, 17, of Coaldale.

The MJT wraps its regular season with the invitation-only MJT Boston Pizza National Tour Championship at Nicklaus North and Whistler Golf Clubs in Whistler, BC, later this month. The post-season in Alberta consists of two one-day tournaments at Innisfail Golf Club in Innisfail on September 16th and Paradise Canyon Golf Resort in Lethbridge on September 23rd.
