NATIONWIDE TOUR STORYLINES – Week of June 29th

TOM GILLIS DEDICATES IMPRESSIVE VICTORY TO FRIEND, CHRIS SMITH –Nationwide Tour Players Cup champion Tom Gillis produced 29 birdies on a tough Pete Dye Golf Club course in West Virginia on Sunday to record his first Tour win. The 40-year-old Michigan native captured the title by three shots and immediately dedicated it to his good friend and the good friend of many on the Nationwide Tour, Chris Smith. He credited the perspective he got from last week’s tragic death of Smith’s wife, Beth, and the serious injury of their two children as the result of an automobile accident. “I was in shock. We all were. All week long I said I wasn’t going to let one shot bother me. It’s amazing how life can change at a moment’s notice.”

GILLIS MAKING THE MOST OF HIS OPPORTUNITIES – With only conditional status beginning the 2009 season, Tom Gillis’ first event was the BMW Charity Pro-Am in May. He has now played in five tournaments with his worst finish a T36. Of the 20 rounds he’s played, 12 have been in the 60s and only four over par. He is a collective 55-under-par. As a result, Gillis has overtaken Michael Sim in the Scoring Average stat, 68.95 to 69.09. Gillis’ 29 birdies in West Virginia was only two off the all-time Nationwide Tour record set by Craig Lile in the 2003 Cox Classic in Omaha, Neb.

BLAKE ADAMS / NEW MAN ATOP THE DRIVING DISTANCE STAT – For much of last year and a good bit of the 2009 season, Australia’s Won Joon Lee was in full command of the Driving Distance stat on the Nationwide Tour. The Korean-born Lee finished the 2008 season with a longer per-drive average than PGA TOUR leader Bubba Watson (315.7 yards vs. 315.4, respectively). In 2009, Lee has some serious competition in Blake Adams. The Georgian has led the category after the last five Nationwide Tour events, with Lee next in line. Blake currently maintains a three-yard advantage (314.9 vs. 311.9).

TOP FINISH MOVES JONAS BLIXT IN “THE 25” MIX – Sweden’s Jonas Blixt picked up in West Virginia where he left off after shooting 61 last Sunday in the final round of the Fort Smith (Ark.) Classic. The 2008 Florida State All-American enjoyed his second best Nationwide Tour finish in the Nationwide Tour Players Cup, a 4th, to advance 15 spots to No. 24 on the money list. Inconsistency appears to be the only thing holding the Swede back. He has played in all 14 events this year, making the cut eight times. His worst finish outside of his missed cuts is a T34. His best finish is a T3 in the Chitimacha Louisiana Open.

“SIR CHARLES” HEADED TO CANADA NEXT WEEK – On the heels of his recent participation on “The Haney Project”, Basketball Hall of Fame member Charles Barkley will make a return engagement on Golf Channel next week when he plays in the Ford Wayne Gretzky Classic presented by Samsung. “Sir Charles” will join Gretzky and other friends from the sports and entertainment fields in the pro-celebrity format. Canadian golf fans will get to make up their own minds first hand as to whether or not Barkley’s swing is fixed.

DID YOU KNOW? – Fort Smith Classic winner Jason Enloe and last year’s champion Colt Knost both attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, both currently live in Dallas and both call Royal Oaks Country Club their home course.

NEXT WEEK – The Nationwide Tour plays near the shores of scenic Georgian Bay (about 90 miles northwest of Toronto, Canada). The Ford Wayne Gretzky Classic features a pro-am format that includes many of the Hockey Hall of Fame member’s friends from the National Hockey League and entertainment field.
