Acaster Wins Spot on Team to Scotland at North Battleford
NORTH BATTLEFORD, SK – The second stop in Saskatchewan on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), Canada’s only national junior tour run exclusively by Golf Professionals, was held this past weekend at North Battleford Golf Club in North Battleford, where young players from Saskatchewan and Alberta competed for a spot on Maple Leaf Team Canada to Scotland.
The two-day MJT-ACT/UCT Junior Classic presented by Finora was to qualify one boy for the Canadian contingent in the Scotland Kingdom of Fife Team matches in St. Andrews, Scotland, August 22-24, 2006. The rest of the eight-player squad for 2006 is selected from other qualifiers across the country.
Tim Acaster, 17, of North Battleford, SK, fired rounds of 75-70 (145) on his home course to claim the low overall score for the tournament and win the Boys 17 and up division by three strokes, securing his spot to Scotland. “I kept the ball in play and didn’t leave myself any hard putts,” he said. “I had a good weekend.” Tied for second behind Acaster at 148 total score were Andrew Funk, 17, of Edmonton, AB, (75-73) and Nevin Gloe, 17, of Battleford, SK.
Champion of the Boys 14-16 division was Cory Southam, 16, of Strongfield, SK, and Riverside Golf Club, who came from behind to overtake six other players ahead of him and edge first round leader Jesse Gibson, 14, of Saskatoon, SK, by one stroke. Southam, another Riverside Golf Club junior, shot 83-75 for a 158 total score. Gibson posted 78-81 (159). Third place was claimed by Chad Lavallee, 16, of Meadow Lake, SK, and Meadow Lake Golf Club, with scores of 82-78 (160).
Jehremy Ryde, 13, of Eston, SK, and Eston Riverside Golf Club, won the Boys 13 and under division title after posting scores of 84-87 (171). Three strokes back in second place was Meadow Lake Golf Club junior Jared Tupper, 13, of Meadow Lake, SK (90-84=174) while third spot went to Riverside Golf Club junior Taylor Afseth, 13, of Saskatoon, SK, who shot 87-88 (175).
In the Girls division, Kyla Reay, 17, of Saskatoon and Moon Lake Golf Club, continued her winning streak on the MJT and ran away with the winner’s trophy with scores of 86-76 (162). Renee Whyte, 16, of North Battleford and North Battleford Golf Club, came second with scores of 92-93, while Thea Hedemann, 13, of Saskatoon and Riverside Golf Club, placed third (102-107).
The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Scott Piett, 13, of Eston, SK, Taylor Smith, 16, of Swift Current, SK, Riley Nordli, 20, of Edmonton, AB, and Kyla Reay. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Taylor Afseth, Chad Lavallee, Mitch Cook, 17, of Battleford, and Kyla Reay.
The MJT wraps up its Saskatchewan schedule on July 4-5 at The Willows Golf Club in Saskatoon with the MJT-CPGA of Saskatchewan Junior Championship presented by AirSource – a qualifier for the North American Junior Championship in New Braunfels, Texas, U.S.A., this December.
