PGA Champion Rich Beem will not be attending the ACC
Rich Beem at Sahalee (Press Interview)
PGA Champion Rich Beem made it official Tuesday, when he told Air Canada Championship director of player recruitment John MacNichol that he would not be teeing it up next week in the ACC at Northview. Three weeks ago Beem captured The International, then stunned the golf world with an impressive performance in winning last week's major, the PGA Championship. And moments after Beem met with MacNichol, Barry Sharpe spoke with MacNichol about the loss of this star attraction:

The hottest autograph in golf these days belongs to a resident of Arizona from Texas who has won the two tournaments he's entered the past three weeks, has earned $1.8 million dollars in those two events alone and is still in shock after capturing last weekend's PGA Championship. However, with all the good that's happened to Rich Beem lately he's having to make sacrifices he hadn't anticipated and one of them is having to cancel his visit to Vancouver to play in next week's Air Canada Championship.

Beem, who turns 32 on August 24, officially apologized to Air Canada Officials Tuesday. Winning the PGA
Championship, the first major in his 4th year as a PGA TOUR member, carries with it a number of major responsibilities and a couple of those will be taken care of just as soon as this week's World Golf Championship-NEC Invitational at Sahalee Country Club in Washington is over. Beem has been booked on David Letterman's NBC Late Show, he'll make an appearance on the ABC Good Morning America program along with a number of other personal appearances, all of which are expected of the winner of one of golf's most prestigious tournaments.
Air Canada officials graciously accepted Beem's apology, even though it may mean Beem will likely miss playing in
the final PGA TOUR event to be staged in Greater Vancouver since the TOUR arrived at Surrey's Northview G&CC in
1996, becoming the Air Canada Championship in 1999. Air Canada has had a change in corporate policy regarding
advertising and public relations and no new sponsors have been announced.
