PGA of BC Remembers Jim Gibson
RICHMOND, B.C - (February 14, 2012) - The PGA of British Columbia regrets to inform its members and friends of the passing of recent PGA of BC Lifetime Achievement Award winner and Honorary Director, James (Jim) Gibson. Jim passed away February 13th at the tender age of 88. He is survived by his wife (Wilma), children (Kathy and Ross), and three grandchildren.
The Gibson family respectfully requests for privacy during this difficult time.
Details regarding any Celebration of Life services will be communicated as soon as possible.
Jim was honoured in early October of last year as the sixth recipient of the highest level of honour the PGA of BC can offer, the Lifetime Achievement Award (click here for video highlights from the evening's ceremony). The award honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the Association over extended periods of time and one quick scan of Gibson's golfing resume made him an obvious choice for the PGA of BC.
To highlight a few, Gibson was President of the BCGA for three years and was bestowed an honorary lifetime Governor. Gibson was the proud recipient of the PGA of BC's Patron of the Year award (an award the Association recently dedicated to Gibson), and he earned the position of Honorary Director with the PGA of BC. Gibson was also the former Director of Golf, Club Captain, and Senior's Club Champion at the esteemed Capilano Golf and Country Club. Gibson's golf accomplishments are equally impressive as he has set three different golf club's course records, including a 62 which still stands at Gleneagles Golf Club.
Gibson was a multiple Club Champion winner at Seymour Golf & Country Club and finished 13th at the 1954 Canadian Open, one stroke ahead of his good friend, and fellow Lifetime Achievement recipient and legendary Canadian golfer, Stan Leonard. In 2002, Gibson received the Queen's medal, one of only 50 given out in Canada.
Gibson has committed himself to the Rules of golf as Governor for the Royal Canadian Golf Association for eight years and Rules Chairman for Amateur Status. He was extremely skillful and tactful as a rules official. Gibson sought to assist, not penalize players, and was able to perform this duty with his warm personality and high degree of class and general fondness for all PGA of BC members.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Gibson family during this difficult time.
