Historic Event at Papagayo Golf and Country Club - Par 4 Hole in One!
Last week at The Papagayo Golf and Country Club, the incredible and unimaginable happened. Danny Carmichael, owner of Pacific Coast Exterminators, achieved golf immortality by hitting a hole in one. However, this was not an ordinary ace (golf slang for a hole-in-one). Carmichael struck golf glory on a 310 yard par four.
The odds of getting a hole-in-one are 8000 to one. But, almost all of these come on par threes. The web site does not list the odds of aces on par fours because they rarely occur. As Dave Reynolds, owner of the Papagayo Golf Course put it, “Hole in ones on par fours are almost unheard of.”
Along to witness this monumental occasion were Carmichael’s three playing partners: John Worton, owner of the Coco Palms Hotel, Paul Jonathon, owner of Congrejos Restaurant in Playa Panama, and Savannah Wilkison, a business consultant who works with The Papagayo Golf and Country Club.
Carmichael aced the par four seventh hole, a tricky 310 yard dog leg right. To give the non avid golfer an idea of what a tremendous shot this is, Tiger Woods’s average driving distance on the PGA Tour is just over 300 yards. In other words, Carmichael crushed the ball.
On a normal day, Carmichael normally lays up (golf slang for choosing to hit a shot shorter than you are capable of in order to avoid a hazard or to position the ball in a certain spot). He does this on his tee shot to elude the trees and heavy rough blocking the green. However, on this particular day, he noticed that the pin placement was a bit closer than usual. Carmichael decided to go for it all.
However, there was one problem; he didn’t have the right club. So, he turned to Savannah Wilkison and asked if he could borrow her Callaway Big Bertha driver. Like any good golfing partner, Wilkison obliged. Carmichael smashed the ball off the tee and lost sight of it as the trees blocked his view. Carmichael walked to where he thought he had hit the ball, and he could not find it.
After a few minutes of searching, Carmichael figured he had lost his ball. So, he decided to take a drop and chip up on the green. As all the players approached the green, Paul Jonathon lifted the flagstick and noticed there was a ball in the cup. He screamed, “Check the hole!” After a few moments of bewilderment, the group realized it was Carmichael´s Titlelist ball. When the realization set in, “there was a lot of jumping up and down and celebrating,” said Wilkison. Carmichael added, “Fantastic!”
Clearly, words cannot begin to describe the euphoric, momentous occasion. The group surmised that the ball had hit a sand trap just in front of the green, skidded off and bounced onto the green directly into the hole.
The clubhouse was jovial after hearing the news. Everyone enjoyed a round of drinks courtesy of Carmichael. For his astounding achievement, Carmichael received 300 dollars worth of golf and a 300 dollar cash prize from Mr. Reynolds and The Papagayo Golf Course and Country Club. According to Ms. Wilkison, there will be a plaque made in honor of this great event that will be mounted on the wall in the clubhouse along with the scoreboard and Titleist ball Danny used that day. There will also be a brass plaque at the seventh hole to commemorate the hole-in-one. This is the first ace ever at the course.
Mr. Reynolds also decided to inform Callaway, the golf club manufacturer and Titleist, the ball company. There has yet to be a formal response from either business. As for Wilkison, whose club Carmichael borrowed to hit the hole-in-one, a reward has yet to be fully determined. She simply said, “We’re still negotiating.”
