LAPOINTE CAPTURES FOURTH CANADIAN AMATEUR TITTLE

Prince Albert, SK (August 20, 2004) – Mary Ann Lapointe of Georgetown, ON., took home her fourth Canadian amateur title in 20 tries during the final round of the Royale Cup National Women’s Amateur Championship held Friday in Prince Albert, SK.

Lapointe, 44, carded a 75 in the closing round to finish with a four day score of 72-70-70-75--287. Jil Swenson of Sherwood Park, AB finished the tournament in second place at plus three, four strokes behind Lapointe.

“I’m really happy with the way I played this week. Coming in I knew I had to play consistent and I think I did that,” said Lapointe minutes after her victory. “It’s always good to win. Playing against these young kids makes it fun.”

With only four shots separating Swenson and herself heading into today’s round, Lapointe admitted that she played the course conservative.

“I definitely played defensive today. That was the game plan from the start. I wanted to put each hole to bed one at a time and rack up as many pars as I could.”

Lapointe certainly did that, posting 12 pars, two birdies and three bogies over the course of 18 holes.

With her victory, Lapointe added to the the Canadian Ladies’ Golf Association record books by becoming the oldest champion at age 44, and moving into fourth on the all-time wins list with four (1993, 1996, 1999 and 2004).

Ironically, Lapointe’s second Canadian amateur title in 1996 was won on a Saskatchewan golf course. That year, Lapointe hoisted the Duchess of Connaught Trophy in North Battleford, SK.

The Duchess of Connaught Trophy is presented annually to the Canadian Champion and this is the first year that the Royale Champions Trophy which was commissioned this season to recognize the champions of each Royale National Women’s Championship (junior, amateur and senior).

Competitors were greeted Friday morning to a one hour frost delay. Play got underway at 8:30 am and warm clear conditions with temperatures rising to the mid 20’s by mid-afternoon.
