Royale Named Title Sponsor of National Women's Golf Championships
Oakville, ON (June 23, 2004) - Irving Tissue, makers of the Royale brand of consumer paper products, have signed an agreement to become the title sponsor of the Canadian Ladies' Golf Association's (CLGA) national amateur golf championships including its oldest and most prestigious championship - the National Women's Amateur - first held in 1901.
The three-year partnership agreement which was reached earlier this week, sees the Royale brand of tissue, given exclusive naming rights to each of the CLGA's National Amateur Championships including the Junior Girl's, Women's Amateur and Women's Senior events. This partnership is
viewed as a critical step within the CLGA's strategic plan, one which sees its national amateur championships recognized internationally in terms of level of competition and the quality of experience of each player.
"Women's golf is growing in popularity and it is our intention through this partnership and our involvement with the CLGA's National Championships, to assist in bringing a greater profile to women's golf," says Bob Crossman, Vice President of Corporate Relations with the Irving
Tissue Corporation, Royale's parent company.
"We recognize that the sport continues to grow for women and this partnership aligns perfectly with our identified demographic of consumer for this brand," continues Crossman. "Not only do we see this as a strategic partnership, but an opportunity to begin something special that will create a long lasting relationship between female golfers across Canada and our Royale brand of products."
"The CLGA is very pleased to have an industry leader such as Royale brand of tissue come on board to take a significant sponsorship role with our organization," states CLGA Executive Director Jeff Thompson. "It is equally as exciting to be working with a partner who is inspired to grow the game for women, in Royale tissue's case, through their involvement with our championship events. I believe the two organizations share the long term vision of creating world class events for our best female golfers of all ages".
The three championships feature the top women amateur golfers in Canada as well as select international competitors from around the world.
The National Women's Amateur Championship - which is classified as an open competition - is the oldest of the three and will be held this season for the ninety-first time in Prince Albert, SK from August 16 to 20.
Last year Lisa Meldrum of Kirkland, QC captured her third consecutive amateur title tying three others (Marlene Streit, Debbie Massey and Dorothy Campbell) who have matched that feat and leaving her one shy of breaking legendary golfer Mabel Thompson's record of four consecutive titles.
The Royale National Junior Girls' Championship will see Canada's best juniors aged 15 to 18 compete in Moose Jaw, SK from August 9 to 12. Just a few weeks later the top golfers aged 50 plus will compete at the Royale National Senior Women's Championship held August 30 to September 2 in Steinbach, MB.
The Irving Group, which is the parent company of Irving Tissue, is not new to the golf industry having already established a foundation with partnerships in Eastern Canada. The Irving Group - Moncton will play a large role in the upcoming Heather Wilbur Scholarship Scramble Tournament held June 29 to July 1 in Moncton, NB. This tournament will
feature players from the United States based FUTURES Golf Tour.
