FEMALE GOLFERS RAISE OVER $65,000 IN SUPPORT OF BREAST CANCER RESEARCH
Inglewood, ON (September 20, 2004) - One hundred and forty-four female golfers hit the links on Monday at Caledon Country Club in Inglewood, ON., to raise money for breast cancer research and celebrate the success of the Scramble Fore The Cure program run by the Canadian Ladies' Golf Association (CLGA).
Organizers dubbed the National Event a huge success with a full field contributing to its goal of introducing females to competitive golf and raising money for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF). Overall the program raised a total of $69,294.00 for breast cancer research with a significant contribution coming from the Regional/Club portion of the
program.
"This year was an excellent success in terms of participation and funds raised," said Jeff Thompson, Executive Director of The CLGA. "While we believe this is just the start, we are extremely happy with the programs outcome this season and are looking forward to continuing to grow this unique fundraising and participation program for women."
"It's events like the Scramble Fore The Cure that help to drive awareness, and raise funds towards our goal of creating future without breast cancer" said Sarah Ray of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
The largest share of funds came from the Regional/Club portion of the program which is a turn-key element to the program enabling community groups to use golf as a medium to raise funds for the CBCF. The CLGA launched the program to its membership in early May of 2004 with Regional/Club Tournaments being held throughout the summer across Canada. As well, Women of Influence Luncheon Series presented an
additional Corporate Tournament also contributing to the final total.
"With the program being only two-years old, we see this as just a step into what we hope will grow and grow," continues Thompson. "Our goal is to see every club in Canada host an event and raise $1000.00 through the pledge program. If we could achieve this, the contribution would be well over 1.6 million dollars - this is not something that is
unattainable and is realistic.
Four golfers from New Brunswick did more then their share to meet the optimistic $1000.00 goal by raising $8,756.00 during the Regional/Club portion of the Scramble Fore The Cure program. As the top fundraising team in the country the four golfers, Irene Walton, Donna Hawco, Joan Fowler and Carol Sprague, all of Saint John NB., earned a trip to play
in the National event - all expenses paid courtesy of the CLGA.
As for the golf on Monday, four recreational golfers earned the title of Scramble Fore The Cure National Event winners. Angela Welch of Glassville, NB., Lisa Thomas, Crystal Brown and Paulene Pelkey all of Woodstock, NB., captured the one-day event by carding a best-ball score of 67 on the par-73 course.
Plans for next year's Scramble Fore The Cure program are already underway with the CLGA and CBCF expected to meet in the near future to discuss how both organizations can build on the synergies of the program. For the latest information on the Scramble Fore The Cure visit www.clga.org
