Sechelt Golf & Country Club
Although Sechelt is only a day trip from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver because of the short ferry ride, there and back, you get the feeling of being on vacation.
Open all year long this 6,400-yard course (complete with practice range and full clubhouse facilities) is a place where a winter weary Vancouverites can go to play golf on regular greens and freshly cut fairways during those bleak January days and summer time golfers can play under the warm summer sun and with the smell of salt air in their nostrils.
Playing the Course
This sunshine coast delight opens with a 368-yard par four that is wide open. A cushy way to start your day. But stay tuned! Number 4, for most people, is the toughest hole on the course. It is 429 yards long; dogleg right and slightly down hill with water skirting the full right side of this fairway. Once you have avoided the water you will see a small green well bunkered down on the left. Yes, that is where your ball is supposed to go, good luck.
Want a challenge?
There is nothing more rewarding than making a par on a long difficult par three. And if you walk away with a par here on the 227 par three 17th you have done well. It is downhill and plays 1 1/2 clubs shorter because of that fact, but with pins tucked in corners and on slopes you are throwing darts more than hitting golf balls. Heck, just figuring out how far away the pin is on the big green will keep you guessing until its too late.
Getting There and Back
BC Ferries says that reservations are not required on this sunshine coast route but during the high summer seasons I really recommend you make them. After you putt out you will be about halfway between golf courses, should you want to play on. Up the road is the 9 hole Pender Harbour course (short but beautiful) and heading back to the ferry dock youll pass by the Sunshine Coast G&CC. If you decide to play here you must make tee times way in advance.
