Second Round Summary of the Greater Vancouver Charity Classic

Adam Speirs fired his second consecutive 67 on Friday to hold a one stroke lead over Brad Heaven after two rounds of the Greater Vancouver Charity Classic.

Byron Smith shot 65 to jump from the pack into solo third, just three strokes behind Speirs.

First round co-leader James Lepp shot 71 and shares fourth spot with Mike Grob (67), Jay Choe (68) and fellow Canadian Scott Hawley who shot 67.

Tied for eighth spot are Canadians Graham DeLaet and Wes Heffernan who both shot 66 along with Justin Itzen (69), Mike Sica (68) and first round co-leaders Joe Lanza and Mitch Tasker who shot 72.

Speirs' bogey-free round included a run of three consecutive birdies for the second day in a row - this one starting at his fifth hole (the 14th).

"I stuck with my game plan out there today and made some good birdies. I hit a nice wedge to about 15 feet on 12 and got it to 2 under there," said Speirs.

"I had another good run starting at the 14th when I made a ten-footer and then made it three in a row at 16.

"I was feeling pretty good at that point but I didn't quite have it on my final nine and made a bunch of pars coming in. It was a good day out there but the wind was starting to pick up at the end of the day."

"It was another nice day of playing with Brad," said Speirs. "We don't actually talk a whole lot since we're both on the quiet side but we've enjoyed playing together the last two days."

For the second consecutive day, Heaven and Speirs fed of each other's round.

"I got off to another good start today," said Heaven. "I just started holing putts right away and had it to 4 under at the turn."

Like Speirs, the New Zealander cooled off on his back nine with one birdie and a closing bogey.

"I find the front side to be a tougher nine," explained Heaven. "You have to play a bit more conservative so you won't see as many birdies.

"It's either that or Adam and I just came back to our senses a bit after playing so well on the back side."

Mike Grob fired a 5 under par 67 after an opening 71 and is primed for a move on the weekend.

"Four birdies on my front side (the back nine) set the tone for the day," said Grob.

"This is a good golf course and the fairways are pretty narrow and the rough is thick and gnarly. As the day went on the greens started to really firm up and it made things a lot harder."

The Canadian Tour's all-time leading money winner is enjoying a resurgence after a slow start to the season.

"It's the difference between Mexico and Canada," said Grob with a laugh.

"I'm from Montana so playing here in Canada is just like being at home and I'm a lot more comfortable on the courses here."

Canadian Andrew Smeeth started the day one off the lead after an opening 68 but a second round 76 dropped him ten shots back into a tie for 41st.

A group of 70 players made the cut at 1 over par 145 or better.

Other Canadians making the cut include Bryn Parry, Florida Q-School winner Ryan Yip, Keven Fortin-Simard, Kent Eger, recent U.S. Open participant Yohann Benson, Derek Gillespie, Stuart Anderson, Patrik Ericson, Mark Leon, Philip Jonas, Mike Mezei, Dustin Risdon, Andrew Parr, Eric Couture, Dale Vallely and Mitchell Gillis.
