Spence Proteau prevails at BC Women’s Amateur Championship
SALMON ARM, B.C. (July 3, 2009) – Christina Spence Proteau of Port Alberni, B.C. can add another B.C. Women’s Amateur title to her already impressive golf resume.
Spence Proteau, the 2006 BC Women’s Amateur champion, entered the final round with a two-stroke cushion but carded a 1-under 35 on the front nine and a 5-over par 39 on the back nine to force a playoff with Soo Bin Kim of Port Coquitlam, B.C.
“I was playing steadily all week,” says Spence Proteau. “I was focused on putting myself in contention heading into the final round. I knew the other players were going to step it up and Soo Bin really poured it on today. This is unbelievable, I’m flabbergasted!”
Kim, fired even par for the day to move up the leaderboard to finish tied with Spence Proteau, two strokes ahead of Langley’s Sue Kim. Sue Kim stands in third at 7-over 295 followed by Kira Meixner in fourth at 8-over 296.
Christina Spence Proteau, Sue Kim, Kira Meixner and Dominique Pytlewski will comprise the B.C. Team for the Royale Cup National Women's Amateur Championship at Royal Oaks Golf Links in Moncton, NB. July 27 – July 31.
Soo Bin Kim, Christine Wong and Lauren Taylor declined spots for the BC Women’s Amateur Team in order to represent B.C. at the Girls Junior Americas Cup. British Columbia clinched second place in the 2008 Girls Junior America’s, lead by Christine Wong who claimed first place – the highest finish ever for a team from B.C.
The Women’s Amateur, considered the “major” women’s amateur golf in the region is also one of the oldest sporting competitions in the province, with the winner taking home the prestigious Flumerfelt Cup.
The B.C. Women’s Amateur/Mid Amateur is one of 13 provincial championships conducted annually by the BCGA. A full listing of players, the leaderboard, and final results can be found on the BCGA website at www.bcga.org.
