Squamish Valley Golf and Country Club

Squamish Valley Golf And Country Club - Squamish BC

From Vancouver it takes only 1 hour to get to a BC legend. Long lush fairways, greens that are manicured almost to perfection and views of mountains, soaring eagles and occasional deer and bear are all a part of the Squamish Valley experience. As well Squamish Valley, about half way between Furry Creek and Whistler, is the best course the public can still afford to play. Making tee times, or getting proper fit on equipment or scoring a few free tips on how to play the course, is as easy as asking head pro Dan Trevisan. He is one of the most out going and friendliest pros in the business.

Opening Shots
Rarely will anyone open up with a birdie on Squamish Valley's first hole, it is asking a lot. After all even if you did take the time to warm up on their driving range, putting green, chipping green and practise bunker or better yet take a lesson from the club's renown teaching pro Charlie Maxwell, a 539-yard par five is still a long hole right off the bat. There are heavy trees, left and right, down the fairway and two fairway bunkers lying end to end on the right hand side. The green is a sea of sand, both greenside and 35-50 yards short on the right. Thankfully the green is big but it gets a lot of sun and wind so you know it is fast. The par 3 16th hole is an often over looked hole. At 132 yards the card says a simple short iron. Maybe, between the 15th green and 16th tee, you may cheat a little and scribble in a 3 sure of your abilities, but hold the phone. The green is exposed to all the wind and is very small. There is a large bunker on the left and knee deep rough on the right and behind. The green itself slopes quickly back to front and right to left. Putting from the right side off the green and back into the bunker is not unusual. Write a three in while waiting for the tee if you must, but make sure you have an eraser handy.

Averages Tell the Tale
The average par four here plays 388 yards. Not so long eh? Well, you are at sea level and there is always some kind of a wind blowing here. Even the touring pros walk away shaking their heads and wondering why they were hitting one sometimes even two clubs more into every green. Squamish's slogan is 'We are worth the drive.' Play them once and you'll agree.
