Sun Rivers Golf Resort Community
Sun Rivers Golf Resort Community
After you pry your eyes away from the views looking down over Kamloops and the surrounding area, look up. Look way up. Mountains, deserts, and big horn sheep. And all so close you will get some of the best photographs of your life. Then take your time and have breakfast, followed by a lunch and later a full sit down dinner, at the club’s own Hoodoo’s Lounge & Grill. After all of that head up the hill to one of the best driving ranges in the province, again with a great view of the horizon, and prepare to play what Golf Digest called the best new course in Western Canada, 2003.
Sun Rivers located only 20 minutes from downtown Kamloops at 1000, Clubhouse Drive, opens with a tester. Number 1 is a 580-yard narrow par 5 that doglegs right and then turns even further right as you approach the green. From the tee you’ll see smoke stacks way off on the left in the distant horizon. Aim at those and let it tip. Before hitting your shot into the green take a second and quickly ride up to the 150-yard mark. It will be from there you will actually see the green for the first time. And remember that on this hole, like the rest here, you are better being short of the pin than long, the greens are that fast.
A classic dessert hole
Number three is the kind of hole oil paintings are made of. It s a classic desert hole. No real fairway just a thin landing area wedged between fairway bunkers left and right to a large but well protected green. The same can be said for the 505-yard par five 18th. A narrow dogleg left hole with desert sage brush covered hillsides framing your every step and a green that looks back up to the clubhouse.
Why take a camera?
There are two or herds of Big Horn sheep living on the course. On some holes, ask the pro shop where they have been seen recently, you can get within a few feet of both ewes and full curl rams. Sun Rivers Golf Resort Community is more than just golf. It is a way of life. There are beautiful places to buy and live there and with a season starting in March and running into November Sun Rivers is a Thompson / Okanogan golf destination the rest of the world is clambering to experience.
