Svensson and Renfrew shoot 67 to share opening round lead at
Castlegar, BC (July 20, 2010) – Adam Svensson of Surrey, B.C. and Cory Renfrew of Victoria, B.C. fired matching 4-under par 67s to share the opening-round lead as action got underway today at the 2010 BC Amateur Championship held at Castlegar Golf Club in Castlegar, B.C.
Svensson, the newly-crowned BC junior boys’ champion, came into the BC Amateur fresh off last week’s victory at the Callaway Junior Worlds at Torrey Pines in San Diego.
Renfrew, the 2009 Canadian University/College Champion, was defeated in the final of last week's Pacific Northwest Golf Association Championship.
On the difference between playing a course in the mountains to the courses at home, Renfrew’s answer is simple.
“It’s a perfect one club difference,” says Renfrew. “Three quarters of a club to account for the altitude and one quarter of a club to keep the ball below the hole - but don’t tell the rest of the field”
2004 Canadian amateur champion, Darren Wallace of Langley, B.C., sits T3rd at 3-under par with 2009 B.C. junior boys’ champion Riley Wheeldon of Comox, B.C., Ben Gresley-Jones of Rossland, B.C., Justin Shin of Pitt Meadows, B.C. and Jordan Melanson of Nelson, B.C.
Defending champion, Daniel Brown of Kelowna, B.C. is T20 at 1-over 72.
The top two finishers along with Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C. and Eugene Wong of North Vancouver, B.C. will represent B.C. at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship at London Hunt/Redtail Golf Course in London, Ontario August 10 – 15.
Taylor and Wong were both given sponsor's exemptions into this week's Canadian Open at St. George's Golf & Country Club in Toronto.
Coinciding with the stroke play championship is the Zone Championship. Zone 4 takes a 4-stroke lead into tomorrow’s finals round after combining for a team total even-par 213.
Following Tuesday’s round, the zone team champions will be crowned and the field will be cut to the low 70 competitors and ties.
