Talking Rock - BURTON SETS THE PACE AT PNGA MASTER–40 AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Play got underway today at the 34th PNGA Men’s Master – 40 Amateur Championship hosted by Talking Rock Resort and Quaaout Lodge in Chase, B.C. Ideal scoring conditions greeted the competitors this morning with calm winds, moderate temperatures and a slight rain in the late afternoon, but the 6,635 yard par-72 championship layout proved to be difficult nonetheless yielding a scoring average of just 81.4.

Bob Burton of Everett, Wash. took the 18-hole lead in the 36-hole stroke play qualifying, firing a 2-under par 70. He used a bogey-free back nine 3-under par 33 to finish the day as the only player of the 69 competitors to shoot under par. Burton has history of success at the PNGA Men’s Master – 40, winning the championship in 2006.

Also in the hunt for medalist honors includes Howard Broun of Calgary, AB and Norris Dancer of Star, Idaho, who both sit in a tie for second place after an even-par 72’s. Broun’s round include three birdies and three bogeys to go along with twelve pars and Dancer had the best round of the day as he approached the final two holes at 3-under par. Unfortunately he suffered a bogey, double bogey finish on holes #17, and #18 to finish at even-par. In addition, 2008 runner-up Harry Ferguson, of Invermere, B.C. positioned himself solidly to battle for medalist honors as well, shooting a 1-over par 73 placing him in a tie for third place.

To be eligible for the Pacific Northwest Men’s Master-40 Amateur Championship, contestants must have reached their 40th birthday by the first day of the competition and also carry a handicap index of 16.4 or less. The championship consists of 36 holes of stroke play qualifying to determine flights for the match play portion of the championship. The lowest 32 scorers from the qualifying rounds will advance to the Championship Flight, with each of the remaining flights being comprised of eight contestants. All matches are single-elimination and contested over 18 holes.
