Two Canadians Tied For The Lead Heading Into Final Round Of Play At the Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur
Duncan, B.C. (Golf Canada) – Second-round leader Vivian Tsui of Markham, Ont., and Paris, Ont. native Jennifer Kirby are tied for the lead at the Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship at Duncan Meadows Golf Club in Duncan, B.C.
The 98th playing of the Duchess of Connaught Trophy is heating up with Jennifer Kirby of Paris, Ont., and Vivian Tsui of Markham, Ont., tied at 3-over par (219) heading into Friday’s finale. The players are competing for an exemption into the U.S Women’s Amateur at Rhode Island Country Club, August 8-14 and the CN Canadian Women’s Open at Hillsdale Golf and Country Club in Mirabel, Que., August 22-28.
Kirby, a former Team Canada member, had a slow start to the day going 2-over par (38) on the front nine. However, the Alabama Crimson Tide player, found her comfort zone on the back nine going 2-under par with no bogeys. The 20-year-old Kirby is an experienced competitor at the Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur, having won both the Women’s and Junior Championship in 2009.
“I’m satisfied with my score for today. I think it [even-par] is a good score with the wind out here today and should keep me in the mix,” said Kirby who found herself tied for the lead as she finished up on 18. “The front nine was a bit of a grind for me; I made a couple of bogeys. I got settled in on the back nine and made a couple of birdies.”
Tsui, the leader over the first two rounds, was 2-strokes ahead until the 16th hole where she carded a double-bogey. However the North Carolina State freshman recovered with pars on the final two holes to hold onto her position in first place. Her best result to date is a T39 at the 2010 Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur.
In sole possession of third place is Alex Stewart of Carson City, Nevada who carded a 2-over (74) to sit 4-over (220) through three rounds. The 19-year-old experienced a rollercoaster round with four birdies and six bogeys. Stewart, who recently transferred from Purdue University to the University of Colorado, birdied the 18th hole to finish one stroke back of the leaders.
There is a three-way tie for fourth place as Erynne Lee of Silverdale, Wash., SooBin Kim of Coquitlam, B.C., and Lee Lopez of Whetier, Calif., are all at 5-over par (221).
Lee vaulted into fourth place with the low-round of the day, a 2-under par 70. The 18-year-old was the only player in the field to shoot under par today.
In the Mid-Amateur division (+25 years) Christina Proteau of Port Alberni, B.C., recaptured the lead that she had after the first round. The local-favorite carded a 4-over par (76) on the day to sit 16-over (232) heading into the final round. She is trailed by Shelly Stouffer of Nanoose, Bay, B.C., who matched Proteau’s 4-over on the day but sits at 20-over (236) for the tournament.
Stouffer is also the leader of the Mid-Master division (+40 years). In second place in that division is Penny Baziuk of North Sannich, B.C. who carded a 7-over par (79) today for athree round total of 240.
Championship play runs from Tuesday, July 19 through Friday, July 22 with 18 holes of stroke play each day. Any tie after 72 holes will result in a hole-by-hole play-off.
