“Vancouver Open Win Qualifies Parry for PGA Tour School”

The 2009 Vancouver Open wrapped up in style on this Tuesday at McCleery Golf Course with Seymour Creek Professional Bryn Parry taking the 54-hole Championship Title after rounds of 66, 65 and 71 for a 12-under total and two shot victory over McCleery Teaching Professional Phil Jonas. With this his fifth victory on the VGT tournament schedule, Parry earned a $5,000 first place winner’s cheque, and more importantly secured first place honours on the year-ending VGT - CLEVELAND GOLF/SRIXON CANADA ORDER OF MERIT with $18,320. Thanks to VGT’s title sponsor MarketPlace IGA and Order of Merit Sponsor Cleveland Golf/Srixon Canada, Parry’s year-end title earned him a bonus $5,000 (U.S.) paid entry to the 2009 PGA Tour Qualifying School held in October.

“That is what I have been playing for all year and obviously I’m very proud of myself and excited about the opportunity to play my way onto the PGA Tour again this fall” stated Parry. “I haven’t played the (Vancouver Parks Golf) courses very much and I was very impressed with them. It was an entertaining tournament for us to play and for the gallery that came out to watch”. “Nobody had seen the courses enough to feel like they had home-course advantage. I’m impressed with Vancouver Parks Golf for stepping up and partnering with Vancouver Golf Tour to host this great event”.

Jonas’ final round 67 at McCleery earned him a second place cheque for $3,000 and moved him into third place in the VGT Order of Merit with $10,788. Canadian Tour regulars Stuart Anderson (3rd on the 2009 Can Tour Order of Merit) and Oliver Tubb tied for third at nine-under par, earning $1,800 each. Tubb will head down to Mexico next week for Can Tour’s next event while Anderson will suit-up to represent Canada at the World Cup 2-man Qualifier in Estonia with fellow Canadian Tour member Graham Delaet.

Parry entered the Vancouver Open event with a $2,000 lead over 21-year old rookie Adam Hadwin of Morgan Creek in the CLEVELAND/SRIXON Order of Merit race for the Q-school entry. Hadwin fired a 2-under par 69 in the final round at McCleery, finishing alone in 5th at 7-under par. Although Hadwin was disappointed he didn’t make the charge to knock Parry off the number one spot on the VGT Order of Merit, he was fairly content with winning $12,525 so far in 2009 and holding down 2nd Place over a lot of great players on the Vancouver Golf Tour. “I played a lot of good golf this year (with four wins in only 9 events) and got to play with a lot of good players and see how they play. I’m ready to keep going for the fall”. Hadwin has already entered to play first stage of PGA Q-school this fall in Florida. Parry has chosen Texas as his first stage site where he has had some success before.

Vancouver Golf Tour would like to extend its congratulations to all amateur champions. The Championship Flight was won by Adam Cornelson of the Vancouver Golf club. Graham of Vancouver took the title in the 'A Flight' Division and Peter Huai of Richmond, BC bested the competition in the 'B Flight'. For full tournament results, click www.vancouveropen.ca.

Congratulations to Randy Gray for his PERFECT SHOT on Sunday at Langara’s 2nd hole, which won Randy a $6,500 CLUB CAR Precedent Power Cart!!! Thanks to Kevin Orton of Club Car for your continued support!

The 2009 Vancouver Open, conducted at Fraserview, McCleery and Langara Golf courses saw a record number of participants (250 golfers) since its inaugural year in 2007. During the opening round of the event Vancouver Golf Tour hosted a Charity Pro-am at Fraserview sponsored by Brad Garside of Paine Edmonds Law Firm. The event was a total success with over 110 golfers competing for a great cause – to raise funds for the CKNW ORPHAN’S FUND. We’re happy to report that thanks to the support of Vancouver Parks Golf and our Pro-am Title Sponsor Brad Garside, we were able to raise $5,000 for the ORPHAN’S FUND charity!!! Thanks to CKNW for partnering with us this year as our premier Media Sponsor – airing daily spots about the Pro-am and Vancouver Open as well as featuring VGT’s Commissioner on-air with Dan Russell two times leading up to the event. Thanks to Jamie Hunt for his support of our event and to our celebrity MC Christy Clarke for taking the time to help us auction off some items that were donated for such a great cause! Thanks also to the Team 1040 for their interview and to Yellow Pages for keeping everyone in the know about VGT throughout the year!

"We have been extremely pleased with the relationship we have had with the Vancouver Golf Tour in conducting this Championship at our Vancouver Parks Golf courses," stated Ron Caswell, Manager of Golf and Park Operations. "We've had some great feedback from the players, many of whom admitted they hadn't played our courses in a while and were amazed at the conditions and playability of all three."

"It was extremely satisfying for our staff to be involved with a tournament of this magnitude and we are really happy to have joined the Vancouver Golf Tour in being able to raise $5,000 for the CKNW Orphan's Fund at the Pro-Am on Sunday at Fraserview," said Howard Normann, Supervisor of Golf Operations. "The quality of golf played by the Professionals is a testament to just how good theses guys are and it was great to see them test our courses, which held up very well," he added.

VGT is very proud to have conducted the 2009 Vancouver Open with Vancouver Parks Golf this year. We have had nothing but fantastic comments from all players this week about all three golf courses’ conditions. All three superintendants (Mike Ferdinandi of Fraserview; Bob Geisbrech of Langara and Stan Dixon of McCleery) should be commended on the immaculate course conditions throughout the event. Moreover, all Vancouver Parks Golf Clubhouse staff should be congratulated for their friendly hospitality and food service throughout the event. Special thanks to Kelley Tofte and Jan Cooke for all their assistance with our event this year. Many thanks go to you and your clubhouse staff for playing a big part in this event. The service was great and there was nothing but positive feedback regarding the players’ meals this week! Special thanks to Jeff and Tara Ciecko of CK Golf Solutions and to Ron Caswell and Howard Normann of Vancouver Parks Golf for supporting our proposal to stage the Vancouver Open at Fraserview, Langara and McCleery this year!
