VIVIAN TSUI LEADS AFTER TWO ROUNDS AT ROYALE CUP CANADIAN WOMEN’S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Duncan, B.C. (Golf Canada) – Vivian Tsui of Markham, Ont., maintains her 1-stroke lead after carding a second round 1-over par (73) and two-round even-par (144) to lead Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship. The host province, Team British Columbia, captured the Inter-Provincial Team Championship at Duncan Meadows Golf Club in Duncan, B.C.

Tsui a Markham, Ont. native remains in the lead by 1-stroke after the two rounds at the Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship. The 17-year-old carded 1-over par (73) today, putting her at even-par (144) for the tournament. Tsui, 17, faltered slightly bogeying her 12th and 13th hole but recovered with a birdie on the 14th to solidify her lead.

“I wasn’t expecting this at all really. It’s a bit of a shocker but I am glad I played well the first two days,” said Tsui about her 1-stroke lead. “My short game definitely saved me out there. My putting was good, I was able to get it to the hole today and save some pars and birdies.”

Tsui, who will be a freshman at North Carolina State come September, is playing in her third Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur event with her first being in 2008 as a 14-year-old. Her best finish to date is T39 at last year’s Championship but the teenager is in ample position to improve upon that result.

In second place for the overall championship is Demi Frances Runas of Torrance, Calif who trails the leader by one stroke. Runas, a rising junior on the UC Davis Aggies golf squad in California, kept herself into the mix by birdying three straight holes to finish the day at 1-under (74) and 1-over par (145) for the tournament.

Team Canada Development Squad member Taylor Kim of Surrey B.C. played well carding the low round of the day, a 3-under par (69). The solid score puts her at T3 with Alexandra Stewart of Carson City, Nev. The pair is 2-over par (146) on the tournament.

Former Team Canada national team member Jennifer Kirby of Paris, Ont. is T5 with current Team Canada Development Squad member Augusta James, of Bath, Ont. Both players are 3-over par (147) heading into the third round.

Other notables in the top-10 include Team Canada National Team members Nicole Vandermade of Brantford, Ont., and Rebecca-Lee Bentham of Toronto, 2011 B.C Junior Girls Champion SooBin Kim of Coquitlam, B.C., and UCLA Bruin (2011 NCAA Division I Champions) Lee Lopez of Whetier, Calif.

The host province, Team British Columbia, captured their 17th Inter-Provincial Championship as members Christina Proteau, Amanda Baker, and SooBin Kim, carded a combined 8-over par to win the team title by 1-stroke. Team B.C. defeated Team Ontario which includes members Augusta James, Taylor Schmidt, and Erica Rivard.

The Mid-Amateur division (+25 years) features a tie atop the leaderboard as round-one leader, Christina Proteau of Port Alberni, B.C., is tied with Andrea Kosa of Calgary. The twosome sits at 12-over par (156) heading into the final two rounds.

In the Mid-Master division (+40 years) Sandra Turbide of Maple Ridge, B.C. holds a 2-stroke lead over Shelly Stouffer of Nanoose Bay, B.C. Turbide was 8-over (80) on the day and sits at 14-over for the tournament while Stouffer was 5-over (77) for the round and 16-over for the tournament.

The two round cut was made today at 20-over par (164). In total 71 players made the cut in individual stroke play. By virtue of the required minimum of Mid-Amateur (10 players) and Mid-Master division (five players) competitors two other players made the cut, bringing the total to 73.

The Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship is a 72-hole stroke play event. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low 70 and ties. An inter-provincial team championship will also take place in conjunction with the first two rounds of stroke play.

Championship play will be conducted Tuesday, July 19 through Friday, July 22 with 18 holes of stroke play each day. Any tie after 72 holes will result in a hole-by-hole play-off.
