VIVIAN TSUI LEADS BY TWO AFTER OPENING-ROUND AT ROYALE CUP CANADIAN WOMEN’S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHP
Duncan, B.C. (Golf Canada) – Vivian Tsui carded an opening-round 1-under par 71 to lead Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship while B.C natives Christina Proteau and Kim Evans had solid first rounds to lead their respective divisions at Duncan Meadows Golf Club in Duncan, B.C.
Vivian Tsui of Markham, Ont. is the leader after the opening round of the Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship. Tsui, 17, was consistent despite steady winds that blew across the challenging Duncan Meadows Golf Course. Tsui, who finished fifth at the Inverstors Group Junior Girls Ontario Championship, completed the day at 1-under par (71) and was propelled by three birdies.
Tsui is trailed by a trio of Canadian and American players that currently sit T2 at 1-over par. Canadians Christina Proteau of Port Alberni, B.C.,former Team Canada member Jennifer Kirby of Paris Ont., as well as American Alexandra Stewart of Carson City Nev., all carded 72’s to create a four-way tie for second place in the overall championship.
Kirby, the 2009 champion at this tournament and the Royale Cup Junior Girls Championship, bogeyed her final hole of the day to drop two off the pace. Kirby, 20, also showed off her long-ball skills, piping a 256 yard drive to capture the long-drive championship in Monday’s practice round.
Christina Proteau, who won her third B.C Women’s Amateur title this year at her hometown course, the Alberni Golf Club, is also the leader in the Mid-Amateur division (+25 years of age). The 28-year-old, who recently competed in the 2011 U.S. Open where she narrowly missed the cut, holds a two stroke lead over Kim Evans of Lantzville, B.C.
Evans, currently leads the Mid-Master division by three strokes after carding an opening-round 3-over par (75).
In inter-provincial competition Team British Columbia members Christina Proteau, Amanda Baker, and SooBin Kim, carded a combine 5-over par to lead the contest by 5 shots over Team Ontario which includes Team Canada Development Squad member August James, Taylor Schmidt, and Erica Rivard.
The inter-provincial competition wraps up tomorrow as the low two scores from each team will be compiled to determine a provincial champion.
The Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship is a 72-hole stroke play event. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low 70 and ties. An inter-provincial team championship will also take place in conjunction with the first two rounds of stroke play.
Championship play will be conducted Tuesday, July 19 through Friday, July 22 with 18 holes of stroke play each day. Any tie after 72 holes will result in a hole-by-hole play-off.
Starting times, post-round results, full field list, and live scoring are available here.
Chip Shots
Shot of the day honours are shared by Janet Ruest of Cobble Hill, B.C., and Carly McNaughton of Lethbridge Alta. Both players carded hole-in-ones on the day with Ruest’s ace coming on the Par 3 7th hole and McNaughtons eagle coming on the Par 3 16th. For Ruest it was the third hole-in-one of her career and first in a large tournament while McNaughton’s eagle was the first she’d recorded throughout her golfing experiences.
