Victory for Adams at the CPGA Women’s Championship presented by Aquafina

Thornhill, ON (September 10, 2003) After two grueling playoff holes, 24-year-old Kimberly Adams of Tide Head, NB, took home her first professional victory at the Canadian PGA Women’s Championship presented by Aquafina, a BMO Financial Group Canadian Women’s Tour event. Adams (73-74) defeated Isabelle Beisiegel of St. Hilaire, PQ (74-73). Both players finished at three-over 147.

Adams’ one-over-73 yesterday gave her a one-shot cushion heading into the final 18-holes over Beisiegel and amateur Mary Ann Lapointe of Georgetown, ON. She went to three-over through 12 holes, but rebounded back to one-over with birdies on 15 and 16. With a two-shot lead going into 18, Adams doubled to tie Beisiegel, who missed a birdie putt by inches, sending the tournament into a playoff.

The duo made pars on the par four ninth hole and made their way to number one, a par five. Beisiegel pushed her tee shot right and landed out of bounds, forcing her to hit a provisional ball, which landed smack in the middle of the fairway, 249 yards from the hole. Adams’ drive also went right, but landed in the rough just off the fairway.

Now lying three after stroke and distance penalties, Beisiegel’s second shot landed in the greenside bunker, while Adams’ second shot landed in the fairway 98 yards from the pin.

Beisiegel made a great bunker shot to 10 feet and waited for Adams’ next move, who was now pin high, 30 feet from the cup. Adams missed the birdie putt, but made a five-footer for par to capture her first professional victory.

Not only does Adams take home an $8,100 paycheque, but the win at this, the final event of the 2003 BMO Financial Group Canadian Women’s Tour, earned her an exemption for the 2004 BMO Financial Group Canadian Women’s Open in Niagara Falls.

“That is sweet,” smiled Adams. “I had no idea that I would be getting the exemption. I just played in the U.S. Open this year and getting the chance to go to the Canadian Open is amazing.”

Last week, Adams lost in a six-hole playoff for the final two spots at the first sectional round of LPGA Q-school. She will be leaving for California this Friday for her second attempt to make it to the final round next month in Daytona Beach, Fla.

“Last week, I had a hard time controlling my nerves,” Adams stated. “It was nerve wracking out there today and I was trying to use my nerves to my advantage instead of against me. This is a great confidence booster for me heading into next week.”

What is ironic is that Adams almost never made it to the tournament. Her father was admitted into hospital last week with kidney complications and she wanted to stay at home to see him through his recovery.

“I found out last weekend that my dad might have his kidney removed and I was going to pull out to be with him,” she said. “Knowing that he was stable in the hospital, there was nothing that I could do so I decided to come out and play. We kept in close contact and he reassured me that he was fine. I think my parents were both crying when I told them that I won. They were just so thrilled.”

Recently-turned professional Alena Sharp of Hamilton, ON, shot a 75, five shots better than yesterday. Her roller coaster round included four birdies, five bogeys and a double.

“I’ve been struggling on the back nine for the past two days,” said Sharp, who doubled 16 and bogeyed 17 and 18. “I played well, but I didn’t finish well.”

She will head down to New Mexico in the beginning of October to train for the final round of LPGA Q-School with Paul Brilliant, Rich Beam’s short game coach. While she isn’t playing golf, Sharp will take time off to relax, refresh and get ready for Q-school.
